Silence-in-the-End was a Forerunner individual who lived during the High Ecumene era, prior to their civilisation's downfall.
Biography[edit]
In his earlier life Silence-in-the-End served alongside Bitterness-of-the-Vanquished and the unnamed mother and father of the future-Ur-Didact, whom he held in high regard.[3] At the conclusion of the Kradal conflicts, Silence was one of the Forerunners tasked with escorting the young future-Didact into an arena to watch the execution of his parents, the leaders of the rebellion.[1] After this he escorted him out of the arena onto a Strix-class harrier Grievance, where he expressed his sympathy for the young manipular's present circumstances. During the flight, Silence encouraged the manipular to rest in a stasis bed, in reality a ruse, with the stasis bed designed to wipe the manipular's memories such that he would awaken with no knowledge of his previous identity.[2]
A century later the younger warrior was awoken on Nomdagro, now with no memories of his name or upbringing, and found that he had unusually undergone his first mutation while in stasis and was now a first-form. Silence had been the template for this mutation, and as such Silence's genetic imprint was embedded within his genetic code to guide his future development. Silence worked with another senior Warrior-Servant, Bitterness-of-the-Vanquished, to train the younger warrior—now given the name Shadow-of-Sundered-Star—in the arts of war and combat. While Bitterness took on the young Shadow as her personal ward and directed his training, Silence was responsible for everyday instruction and served as Shadow's mentor. He trained the young Warrior-Servant over the River Dwoho and hit him when he attempted to inquire about his missing memories until the young warrior eventually stopped. Eventually he was forced to divulge the truth of Shadow's prior life after he had managed to figure it out for himself, reflecting on how his parents had failed in their rebellion and advising on where Shadow should go from there—to obtain power and prestige.[3]
When Shadow had been attacked by some of the other warriors-in-training, Silence only concerned himself with whether Shadow had won the fight, before working to remove their memories of Shadow's true upbringing as to keep the younger warrior safe. The next day he conversed with Bitterness over what to do with Shadow now that he knew his true identity; this conversation was overhead by Shadow, leading him to run away from Nomdagro and chart his own path in life. Despite abandoning his training on Nomdagro however, Shadow-of-Sundered-Star took Silence-in-the-End's teaching to heart and rose the ranks of the Warrior-Servants, eventually coming to lead them.[3]
After the Ur-Didact's defeat in 2557, he was shown memories of his training with Silence-in-the-End during his time in the Domain as part of the healing process for his mind.[1] Silence's teachings continued to resonate with the Didact, coming back to him during the battle for the Domain in late 2559.[4]
Personality and traits[edit]
Silence was a noted master of the martial art of pan guth, renowned for being so cold and decisive that he was given the nickname "the Shield". During the Ur-Didact's training he wore a traditional Warrior-Servant training robe over a black form-fitting skin that protected and monitored all aspects of his body. He used a plain white xanxa staff.[3] In combat, he wore a combat skin covered in angular protrusions.[1]
Physically, Silence's face bore a broad, blunt nose, with sharp appraising black eyes flecked with white.[3] He had skin with grey-and-white streaks to match his glittering black eyes, alongside high cheekbones, a taut mouth, and a sharp jawline. These gave the warrior a fearsome aura.[1]
He supported the cause of the rebellion in the Kradal conflicts, though also noted that the rebellion would have been responsible for millions of deaths, had it been allowed to continue. He blamed the rebellion's inability to retain support in the Ecumene Council as the reason for its failure, and ultimately relayed to Shadow-of-Sundered-Star the necessity of siezing and holding onto power.[3]
