The Railgun is a weapon that appears in Halo 5: Guardians, returning from Halo 4.
Universe and lore[edit]
- Main article: ARC-920 railgun
The ARC-920 railgun is designed and manufactured by Acheron Security and fires explosive M645 FTP-HE ferric-shelled slugs.
Gameplay[edit]
The Railgun has been improved from its previous iteration. It charges up more quickly, can be scoped in, and now deals full damage against vehicles.
Campaign[edit]
The Railgun's first appearance in the campaign of Halo 5: Guardians is in the mission Blue Team, where it can be found in the Prowler's hangar. After that, it appears in Glassed, Unconfirmed, Evacuation, Reunion, Genesis, and Guardians. Additionally, it can be spawned in the missions Osiris and The Breaking via the Legendary-exclusive Flaming knives on Osiris and UNSC weapons on The Breaking Easter eggs, respectively; the latter also spawns the Arclight variant.
The Railgun deals great damage to higher-tier targets like Elites, Soldiers, and Hunters, being capable of killing them in one or two hits (at least two or three hits for Hunters, if aiming for their exposed flesh).
Multiplayer and Warzone[edit]

The Railgun's REQ card has a Common rarity and requires
energy to be used. Selling it provides
50 to the player's REQ point balance.
A commendation is available that requires the player to get a total of 210 kills with the Railgun across five tiers (5 + 15 + 30 + 55 + 110). Completing each tier awards XP, with the third and fifth tiers additionally awarding a Commendation Reward Pack and Railgun Pack, respectively.
Variants[edit]
Whiplash[edit]
- Main article: Whiplash
- "Acheron Security has recently made great strides in developing compact fast-discharge energy cells and miniaturized sensors. Improved Railgun featuring a faster charge cycle, multiple shots per magazine, and projectiles fitted with proximity airburst fuse.[1]"
The Whiplash is an Uncommon REQ variant of the Railgun. It charges up much more quickly, holds a two-round magazine, and fires projectiles with a proximity airburst fuse, allowing them to detonate upon close proximity with a target. This allows the player to engage enemies more efficiently in situations where rapid reflexes are mandatory for survival. In Warzone, the Whiplash can be requisitioned at a cost of
energy, provided the player has a spare Whiplash REQ card. Alternatively, selling the card yields
75.[1]
The Whiplash, alongside the High Five, can also be used in the campaign mission Reunion via the Legendary-exclusive Flaming plants on Reunion Easter egg. When spawned this way, both weapons have bottomless clip until the very end of the mission, giving the player a significant edge throughout the second half of the mission.
Arclight[edit]
- Main article: Arclight
- "Those who can't acquire super-soldiers acquire super-weapons instead. Advanced Railgun firing armor-piercing high-explosive [APHE] projectiles. Shots take longer to charge, but can be held indefinitely.[2]"
The Arclight is a Rare REQ variant of the Railgun whose projectiles have been modified with an armor-piercing high-explosive (APHE) property, allowing them to pierce through multiple targets at once, including vehicles. Furthermore, the Arclight takes longer to charge, but its charge can be held indefinitely. Its Warzone REQ card has a REQ energy cost of
energy and yields
100 when sold.[2]
The Arclight is also usable in the campaign mission The Breaking via the UNSC weapons on The Breaking Easter egg, which is only available when playing on Legendary difficulty. If executed correctly, the Easter egg spawns not only the Arclight, but also Selene's Lance, High Five, and The Answer.
