- "Our choice has been made, oracle. We shall serve you as the true guardians of Genesis."
- — Dham 'Mashatt, proclaiming the group's founding.[1]
The guardians of Genesis are a group of former Jul 'Mdama's Covenant soldiers who decided to dedicate themselves to protecting the shield world Genesis.[1]
History[edit]
During the Battle of Genesis, a group of Covenant soldiers, including Dham 'Mashatt and Jabjab were imprisoned by the Forerunner Monitor 031 Exuberant Witness in an attempt to stop the fighting raging across the shield world. Following the departure of Fireteam Osiris, Exuberant Witness released Jabjab and 'Mashatt, who found himself unexpectedly filled with pity for TDS-009, a Promethean Knight whose human essence was remembering who it used to be.
'Mashatt wished to break out of his Covenant programming like his former friend and leader Bibjam had done, but he wondered what purpose would be left for him. Questioning the monitor about what can be done with TDS-009, Exuberant Witness suggested that taking it through the Gateway into the Domain would be the best chance for TDS-009 and its human essence to find peace, although she was unsure of how successful it would be with the Domain out of commission for so long and currently under Cortana's control. At 'Mashatt's request, Exuberant Witness released three other Unggoy and a single Mgalekgolo, Naliligaw, imprisoned in the monitor's menagerie.
Addressing the Covenant troops, 'Mashatt told them of the fall of 'Mdama's Covenant, how they had all been transported to Genesis by the Guardian Custodes, and how Bibjam once sought to protect those under his command by betraying the Covenant before he was slain by 'Mashatt. Not wanting to repeat Bibjam's mistake of withholding agency from his brothers, 'Mashatt presented everyone with a choice: return to a location of their choosing with Exuberant Witness's help, or stay on Genesis with the monitor to help her return everyone else transported to Genesis to where they belonged. All of the former prisoners agreed to serve Exuberant Witness as the true guardians of Genesis, with TDS-009 as their first mission.[1]
