'''Grid Kilo 23''' is a sector of the city of [[Old Mombasa]] on the planet [[Earth]].<ref name="out">''[[Halo 2]]'', campaign level [[Outskirts]]</ref>

It consisted of a broad highway, and during the [[Battle of Mombasa]], a [[Covenant]] [[Protos-pattern Scarab|Scarab]] was defending this grid sector, along with great numbers of other Covenant forces. A [[United Nations Space Command|UNSC]] strike force of four [[M12 Chaingun Warthog|Warthogs]] and three [[D77-TC Pelican|Pelican Dropships]] were dispatched over Grid Kilo 23 to attack the [[Prophet of Regret]]'s assault carrier, ''[[Solemn Penance]]'', that was commanding the Covenant forces.

[[UNSC Marine Corps|Marine]] reconnaissance observing the grid sector noted the high Covenant troop concentrations, but failed to see a nearby Scarab battle walker, which was behind a building. As the three Pelicans neared the Scarab, unaware of its presence, the Scarab shot all three of them down with its plasma weapons.

There were several survivors at each crash site, though in both cases the pilots perished in the crash. One of them consisted of [[John-117]], [[Avery Johnson|Avery J. Johnson]], and three anonymous Marines, two with [[BR55 Battle Rifle|Battle Rifle]]s and one with an [[M7/Caseless Submachine Gun|SMG]]. The second was carrying [[Gunnery Sergeant]] [[Marcus Stacker]] and a squad of [[Orbital Drop Shock Troopers|ODSTs]] which crashed landed in a beach behind [[Hotel Zanzibar]].{{Ref/Reuse|out}}
