On [[2552#August|August 30, 2552]], Bravo 001 was tasked with delivering the twenty-two [[Spartan-II]]s of [[Red Team]] to the planet's surface. By the [[Fall of Reach]] in [[2552#August|August 2552]], Bravo 001 was attached to the {{Class|Halcyon|light cruiser}} {{UNSCShip|Pillar of Autumn}} and piloted by Flight Officer [[Mitchell]].{{Ref/Reuse|FS1}}

On [[2552#August|August 30, 2552]], the twenty-two [[Spartan-II]]s of [[Red Team]] led by [[Frederic-104]] were deployed from the ''Pillar of Autumn'' to defend [[Reach]]'s [[orbital defense generator]]s from [[Covenant]] invasion forces, and Bravo 001 was selected to transport the Spartans to the surface. For the purposes of the mission, the Pelican received additional reinforcing and modifications to the troop bay, including the removal of its crash seats and life support systems. Knowing that it would likely be a rough insertion, the Spartans lashed their equipment bags and ammunition boxes to the troop bay floor.{{Ref/Reuse|FS1}}

As Bravo 001 prepared to depart the ''Autumn'' with its passengers, a stray energy burst from the raging battle lanced into the [[hangar bay]], splattered the Pelican's cockpit viewscreen with molten metal, and forced Flight Officer Mitchell to launch immediately. Bravo 001 streaked from the ''Autumn'' and toward Reach's surface, but was noticed by a swarm of [[Seraph]] space fighters. Mitchell requested assistance from [[Knife 26]], the lead fighter in a flight of four [[GA-TL1 Longsword]]s. Three of the Longswords broke formation to deal with the Seraphs while Knife 26 remained on escort duty, guiding Bravo 001 past an [[orbital defense platform]] and toward Reach's surface. Knife 26's pilot warned Bravo 001 that their attack angle was too steep, but Mitchell clarified that they needed to get to the surface fast, and also pointed out a dozen more Seraphs approaching. Knife 26 acknowledged and wished Bravo 001 luck before breaking off to attempt to deal with the Seraphs.{{Ref/Reuse|FS1}} While on approach, Mitchell broadcasted a [[distress call]] which was received by [[Golden Arrow]], a [[radio]] operator in close proximity to the orbital defense generators. Mitchell requested the location of the landing zone, and Golden Arrow instead directed Bravo 001 to head toward [[Mount Törött]] in order to evacuate as the LZ was too hot. However, Bravo 001 reiterated that the orders were strict and that the Spartan-IIs had to be dropped at Golden Arrow's location, and that the Pelican would not even hold together long enough to make it as far as the [[Asźod ship breaking yards|ship-breaking yards]]. The Seraphs gained on Bravo 001 once again and unleashed torrents of plasma fire on the Pelican, with the dropship taking a hit to its aft section which depressurized the troop bay. Mitchell attempted evasive maneuvers, but the cockpit took a direct hit which shattered its viewscreen and instantly killed Mitchell. Bravo 001 began to spin wildly out of control. [[Joshua-029]] attempted to slow their roll via a wall-mounted terminal through which he rerouted control of the Pelican's thrusters. Meanwhile, [[Kelly-087]] detonated the explosive bolts on the troop bay's rear hatch. Due to their rapid descent into the atmosphere, one of the Seraphs lost control and the others broke off. Joshua did what he could to slow the Pelican's descent by angling Bravo 001's thrusters in the reverse position, but the strain on the engines was too great. The dropship's port engine exploded, causing the craft to tumble out of control once more.
