The Banished represents an alliance of independent clans, keeps, packs and other splinter factions aligned under the common leadership of Atriox and his chosen commanders. The inner circle of the Banished's central leadership comprised of [[War Chief]]s who are unrivalled in authority and the very embodiment of Atriox's purposes.{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p448-449|Enc22|page=448-449}}

The fleets under the Banished were led by the leaders of the major clans of the Banished and referred to as [[the Eight]]. The Eight were made up of six [[Jiralhanae Chieftain]]s, one Sangheili [[Kaidon]] and a Kig-Yar War-Queen.{{Ref/Reuse|ET20}} As Atriox and [[Escharum]] mobilized for Zeta Halo, the Warmaster appointed War Chief [[Severan]] in command of the Banished's remaining fleets.{{Ref/Reuse|ET4}}{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET8|ET|Chapter=8}}

The Banished were continually in competition, clans infighting and angling to elevate new leaders. Without the unity of a seasoned central leader capable of maintaining cohesion and with the strategic capabilities to face their enemies, this disunity was a major weakness that would make the Banished vulnerable.{{Ref/Novel|Id=rp14|RP|Chapter=14}} Indeed, following the disappearance of Atriox and Escharum – the Banished's two top leaders – when Zeta Halo vanished, Severan worried that the Banished would be thrown into chaos, becoming a faction of squabbling warlords vying to secure and expand their own fiefdoms, reenacting the clan wars of old. Severan intended to give the Banished purpose, direction and hope and rally them together in the absence of their leaders.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET46|ET|Chapter=46}} On Zeta Halo, the death of Escharum and the presumed death of Atriox created a power vacuum that threw the Banished on the ring into chaos, something that [[John-117]] decided to exploit.{{Ref/Reuse|EOD1}} As witnessed by the Master Chief, without the guiding influence of Atriox and Escharum, the Banished quickly fell back into base instincts and it wouldn't be long before they turned on each other. As a mercenary organization, the Banished are essentially a military hierarchy led by [[Atriox]]. Their prevailing philosophy appeared to be one of ruthless pragmatism, with their operations focusing solely on accruing useful resources for their war machine. Their overall goals ostensibly center around increasing their power through raiding and conquest,{{Ref/Reuse|log outpost}} with Atriox having laid plans for dominance across the [[Orion Arm]].{{Ref/Game|HW2|Phoenix Logs|Detail=Harvester}} During the [[Covenant]]'s reign, the Banished mostly laid low and kept on the move, never claiming territory; Atriox only attacked targets he had something to gain from, largely in the form of supplies and materiel. However, the Covenant did not seem to have been Atriox's ultimate target, instead only being leveraged as a source of supplies to raid. All are welcome to join the Banished provided they submit to Atriox's will, regardless of species. Thus, The Banished represents an alliance of various species species and splinter factions that have pledged loyalty to the [[Warmaster]]. Atriox himself ensured great care was taken to allow the various clans of the Banished to retain some degree of autonomy. Clans were given authority according to their proven worth on the battlefield, ensuring greater constituent diversity while still providing stability and security of a broader organisational structure.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p448-449}}

Atriox did not care for the greater [[Sangheili-Jiralhanae war|Sangheili-Jiralhanae feud]],{{Ref/Comic|Id=ROA4|RoA|Issue=4}} As such, he has welcomed some [[Sangheili]] to join the Banished as mercenaries. Because Atriox and the Jiralhanae in the Banished claim to not have been involved in the [[Great Schism|betrayal and massacre]] of the Sangheili, some Sangheili have willingly accepted the offer, and joined viewing the Banished as "other". Three [[Special Operations Sangheili]] from the [[Silent Shadow]], a former [[Covenant Special Operations]] unit, were successfully convinced by Atriox to join the ranks of the Banished.{{Ref/Reuse|HP}} Additionally, the Sangheili crew of the {{Class|CAS|assault carrier}} ''[[Enduring Conviction]]'' joined the Banished since its [[shipmaster]], [[Let 'Volir]], reluctantly aligned himself with Atriox.{{Ref/Reuse|Gamespot}} These forces were among the first of many [[Sangheili Mercenary]] groups recruited into the Banished. This willingness to work with criminal elements extends to pirate and mercenary organizations of the [[Kig-Yar]]. During the early months of their [[Second Ark Conflict|campaign on the Ark]], the Banished did not employ [[Kig-Yar]] mercenaries. However, [[Chieftain]] [[Minas]] led a strike force that included Kig-Yar on [[Raid on Anodyne Spirit|a mission]] to the abandoned [[Anodyne Spirit|Forerunner Dreadnought]] in the summer of 2559.{{Ref/Novel|Id=Sacrifice|SoR|Adjunct - [[Sacrifice]]}} The group has also hired Kig-Yar pirates dubbed "[[Kig-Yar Freebooter|Freebooters]]" and [[Skirmishers]] during the [[Battle for Zeta Halo]].{{Ref/Game|HINF|in-game Jackal Freebooter enemies}}{{Ref/Game|HINF|in-game Jackal Skirmisher enemies}}

Despite their fairly egalitarian stance, which allowed a few [[Unggoy]] such as [[Briglard]] to climb the ranks of the Banished's meritocracy, most Unggoy within the Banished retain their thrall/slave nature as they did within the Covenant. The numerous Unggoy in their service were generally regarded as mere cannon fodder and are often abused for sport by their Jiralhanae superiors.{{Ref/Game|Id=Raid Camp|HW2|Phoenix Logs|Detail=Raid Camp}} Several "thrall colonies" exist where Unggoy are bred, only to be indoctrinated into the service of the Banished; the most violent individuals were set apart and formed into [[Suicide Unggoy|suicide squads]].{{Ref/Game|HW2|Phoenix Logs|Detail=Suicide Grunts}} This led to a [[Yapyap's rebellion|rebellion]] by grunt forces under [[Yapyap]] on the Ark. 

The Banished have amassed a small complement of [[Huragok]]; those serving on the Ark are imprisoned in harnesses equipped with control yokes keeping them in constant agony to keep them compliant, lest they be distracted by their innate need to repair damaged Forerunner technology.{{Ref/Game|HW2|Phoenix Logs|Detail=Engineers}}

The Banished were formed around [[2549]], during the [[Algolis Invasion]] in the late years of the [[Human-Covenant War]] by [[Atriox]], [[Decimus]], [[En'Geddon]] and several other disgruntled [[Jiralhanae]] who rebelled against their [[Sangheili]] masters, after being used by the [[Covenant]] as cannon fodder repeatedly.{{Ref/Reuse|ANE}} After establishing their group, the Banished started as little more than raiders and [[Piracy|pirates]],{{Ref/Game|Id=log foundry|HW2|Phoenix Logs|Detail=Foundry}} conducting surgical raids against the Covenant and other targets while scavenging for resources and gathering mercenaries to their cause.{{Ref/Reuse|log outpost}}{{Ref/Reuse|ANE}} Evading Covenant enforcers led to Atriox prioritizing stealth in his forces.{{Ref/Game|HW2|Phoenix Logs|Detail=Cloak Generator}} One such attack was on a Covenant training camp in [[2550]], where Atriox and the Banished killed the Sangheili guards and stole everything they could including vehicles and weapons. Decimus advised Atriox that the Banished should travel to the planet [[Otraak]] to recruit an old friend of his, a [[Kig-Yar]] [[T'vaoan]] scientist named [[Sig Raan]]. Decimus was sent to investigate first, where Sig Raan initially welcomed him and his squad showing off her latest invention: a device that could control the [[Yanme'e]] by simulating their [[Yanme'e Queen|queen's]] pheromones. Sig Raan then attacked Decimus with her Yanme'e swarm. Atriox showed up along with more of his Banished forces and attacked Sig Raan in return. Decimus killed her, putting an end to the skirmish.{{Ref/Comic|Id=ROA3|RoA|Issue=3}}

Following the [[Great Schism]], some [[Sangheili]] continued their genocidal campaign against the [[Jiralhanae]] out of hatred. One such group was [[Resa 'Azavayl]]'s Elite squad of the [[Silent Shadow]]. After slaughtering various Jiralhanae [[packs]] across various solar systems, the Silent Shadow boarded Atriox's {{Pattern|Ceudar|heavy corvette}} ''[[Elegy's Lament]]''. The Silent Shadow slaughtered several of the Jiralhanae crewmen aboard, until they encountered Atriox who talked them down. Atriox stated that he and the Banished were different from the Jiralhanae led by [[Tartarus]] and the [[High Prophet of Truth]], who had betrayed and massacred the Sangheili. Upon hearing this distinction, 'Azavayl's squad began to see the Banished as "other". Atriox then told them that they should rejoice that the traitorous Covenant was no more and invited them to join the Banished, to which 'Azavayl's squad expressed they were open to. 'Azavayl himself continued to harbor hatred toward Atriox for being a Jiralhanae, to which Atriox dismissed that vengeance was petty. 'Azavayl attacked Atriox but was killed by his Silent Shadow brethren who wanted to join the Banished. Atriox happily recruited them.{{Ref/Reuse|HP}}

He devised a plan to meet with its Sangheili [[Shipmaster]], [[Let 'Volir]]. Atriox and his Banished attacked a Sangheili-led base on [[Kostroda]], resulting in 'Volir and his forces deploying to the base to defend it. This left ''Enduring Conviction'' vulnerable for a separate Banished strike force to raid and capture the mostly vacant ship. Back on the ground, Atriox surrendered himself to 'Volir after seemingly losing the skirmish at the base, and was brought back up to the bridge of ''Enduring Conviction'' as a prisoner. On the bridge Atriox had his second team of Banished revealed themselves, ambushing 'Volir and turning the tables. Now as a prisoner of Atriox, 'Volir was offered a chance to join the Banished and allow his crew to live a new life as mercenaries and be provided with resources, rather than be used as cannon fodder for the Sangheili-Jiralhanae conflict. Atriox's [[Chieftain]]s led divisions of Banished into Jiralhanae colonies and [[human]] criminal enterprises to build connections and spread their influence.{{Ref/Reuse|H:OSFM2}} Atriox was open to recruiting capable assets of any species and several humans had joined the Banished.{{Ref/Reuse|H:OSFM1}}{{Ref/Reuse|DW5}} As the city of [[New Mombasa]] began [[Project Rebirth|reconstruction]] on [[Earth]], Banished human mercenary groups would flock to the city for opportunity.{{Ref/Reuse|CFEndings}} 

A veteran Jiralhanae Chieftain known as [[Jovus]] had made a name for himself as a warlord after the Covenant's fall, which drew Atriox's attention. The Banished sought to recruit him along with his pack, thus Shipmaster Let 'Volir invited him via video transmission to meet Atriox. Like many Jiralhanae, Jovus was confounded that Sangheili and Jiralhanae would overlook their feud and band together but he accepted the offer to meet Atriox regardless. After a tense meeting, Jovus was killed when he tried to attack Atriox.{{Ref/Comic|Id=ROA5|RoA|Issue=5}}

In [[2558]], a Jiralhanae in the [[Voice of Maardoth]] clan led by [[Hekabe]], suggested contacting the Banished after gaining control of the [[Sharquoi]], to move their new weapons as they needed [[slipspace]]-capable vessels and their own had been destroyed. However, Hekabe refused the suggestion, unwilling to share power with Atriox and the Banished when he wanted it all for himself.{{Citation needed}} A dispute had also led to Hekabe killing a Banished Chieftain known as [[Odanostos]].{{Ref/Novel|HEnv|Chapter=12}} The [[Children of Oth Sonin]] led by [[Lydus]], one of the strongest Jiralhanae master-packs in the wake of the [[War of Annihilation]],{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p247|Enc22|Page=247}} had secretly struck a deal with the Banished, using the Banished to take out Lydus' most dangerous rivals in exchange for full access to his shipyards and land.{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p255|Enc22|Page=255}}

Atriox and the Banished took a fleet led by their flagship ''[[Enduring Conviction]]'' to the extra-[[Milky Way|galactic]] [[Forerunner]] structure known as [[Installation 00|the Ark]], with a force comprised of Jiralhanae, Sangheili, humans, Unggoy, Mgalekgolo, and Huragok. They attacked a [[Henry Lamb research outpost|UNSC research facility]] on its surface, leaving no survivors but [[Isabel]], a [[smart AI]]. The Banished would occupy the Ark, unaware that a large military force would soon encounter them.

In March 2559, 28 years after the {{UNSCShip|Spirit of Fire}} lost contact with the rest of the [[United Nations Space Command]], the vessel arrived at the Ark to find Isabel in the raided outpost. After the crew's Spartan-IIs encountered Atriox in the facility and were chased away by him, the ''Spirit of Fire'' [[Second Ark Conflict|engaged]] the Banished in combat.{{Ref/Level|HW2|The Signal}} Very quickly the UNSC discovered evidence of,{{Ref/Reuse|ANE}} and accessed an Ark [[Cartographer]]. There, the UNSC managed to determine that the Banished were using the Ark's vast portal network to rapidly transport troops across the installation.{{Ref/Level|HW2|The Cartographer}} The UNSC would destroy the Banished's hold on the portals and killed Decimus in the process.{{Ref/Level|HW2|Lights Out}} The ''Enduring Conviction'' went on the offensive against the ''Spirit of Fire'', but after a couple of operations, Isabel and [[Jerome-092]] managed to cause the Ark's sentinels to destroy the ship.{{Ref/Level|Id=underdark|HW2|Under the Dark}}

[[Shipmaster]] [[Let 'Volir]] survived his ship's destruction, and was order by Atriox to take his surviving men to secure the [[Installation 09|new Halo ring]] rising from the Ark's [[Foundry (location)|Foundry]].{{Ref/Reuse|underdark}} Atriox contacted Capt. Cutter and offered him a deal: the Banished would allow the ''Spirit of Fire'' to leave the area unharmed if the UNSC surrendered the Halo ring to him. Many [[Sangheili]] and [[Mgalekgolo]] also defected and joined the rebellion. The [[Throne of Woe]] was established as their new headquarters. After months of battle with the ''Spirit of Fire'', the Banished were still searching for victory against the UNSC crew. [[Pavium]] and [[Voridus]] were sent to scavenge old Covenant ships. Despite being told to not investigate the rubble of ''High Charity'', Voridus breached the containment field around the wreckage anyway. This [[Outbreak on Installation 00|unintentionally released the Flood]] onto the Ark,{{Ref/Level|Id=WCGW|Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare|What Could Go Wrong?}} some of which had survived the destruction of [[High Charity]] and the faulty firing of the unfinished [[Installation 08]] at the end of the [[Human-Covenant War]].{{Ref/Twitter|GrimeBrotherOne|874380206785445888|Jeff Easterling|Y=2020|M=11|D=11|Quote=Guns that are blowing up while firing might not be quite as effective…}} The pair and their forces quickly reactivated the Sentinel Defense Network that was previously disabled to allow them to get the wreckage.{{Ref/Reuse|WCGW}}{{Ref/Level|Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare|The Archive}}

Atriox was furious at Pavium and Voridus, as he would now have to give up a lot of ground they had earned in the conflict with the ''Spirit of Fire'' to assist them in suppressing the Flood. The pair soon discovered that a Proto-Gravemind had formed and was commanding the Flood. With much effort they managed to kill it. Atriox commanded Voridus and Pavium to secure the breach and clean up their mess while thousands of Sentinels began cleansing the surrounding area of the Flood.{{Ref/Level|Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare|Manifestation}} 

Following the incident, Pavium and Voridus' clan, the [[Clan of the Long Shields|Long Shields]], had lost reputation. Of the Banished's many humans, fifteen were under their command.{{Ref/Reuse|DW7B}} A few defected to the UNSC shortly after the Flood outbreak,{{Ref/Reuse|DW5}} leading Pavium to preemptively kick out the rest in his clan and killing some in the process. Atriox was upset with Pavium's decision as he saw all Banished humans as valuable assets.{{Ref/Reuse|DW6}} Atriox also learned on the Ark about the [[Harbinger]] during his time on the Ark and sought to free her species, the [[Xalanyn]], to aid him.{{Ref/Game|HINF|Id=Harbinger|HINF:Audio log#Escharum's Testimony 03|Banished Audio logs|Detail=Escharum's Testimony 03: Harbinger}}

A Banished force allied with the [[Legion#Banished|Jiralhanae legions]] [[Keepers of the One Freedom]], the [[Legion of the Corpse-Moon]], and the [[Clan of the Ravaged Tusks|Ravaged Tusks]], [[Operation: WOLFE|were deployed]] to the glassed surface of [[Reach]] to search for a [[Menachite portal complex|slipspace portal]] which would allow [[Atriox]] to return to the [[Milky Way]] from [[Installation 00|the Ark]], under the orders of [[War Chief]] [[Escharum]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=Chapter 3|SoR|Chapter=3}} They successfully located the portal and activated with the help of the [[Ferret]]s who were undercover in the Keepers of the One Freedom, allowing Atriox to return to the Milky Way in a [[Eklon'Dal Workshop Lich]]. However, [[Castor]] of the Keepers of the One Freedom betrayed the rest of the Banished by going rogue and taking his forces to the Ark, to activate the [[Halo Array]] himself.{{Ref/Reuse|Chapter 21}}

Although Atriox's stated intention was to return to the Ark with reinforcements, he departed with Escharum and his other forces in an [[intrusion corvette]] to attend to a greater purpose, leaving thousands of Banished troops behind to hold the Ark. With the slipspace portal bound to catch the attention of [[Cortana]], Atriox and Escharum left Castor to escape Reach before a [[Guardian Custode]] arrived to investigate.{{Ref/Novel|Id=Chapter 21|SoR|Chapter=21}}

Utilizing the opportunity presented by the opening of the slipspace portal, [[Castor]] [[Battle of Epsilon Clarion|led the]] [[Keepers of the One Freedom]] to the Ark to fire the [[Halo Array]] where both the UNSC and Banished forces under the command of [[Pavium]] and [[Voridus]] sought to foil them, indirectly aiding the [[Ferret]]s in eliminating the majority of the surviving Keepers. However, in the process, the Banished inadvertently got in the way of the UNSC's plan to finally destroy [[Intrepid Eye]]. The Banished suffered heavy losses in the effort, but both Pavium and Voridus survived while the {{UNSCShip|Spirit of Fire}} destroyed the installation that the Keepers intended to use to fire the Halo Array and Intrepid Eye along with it. The brothers intended to report to [[Let 'Volir]] that their efforts had delayed the Keepers long enough for the humans to launch their strike.{{Ref/Novel|Id=DW|DW}}

While scavenging, Banished [[War Chief]] [[Severan]] of the [[Vanguard of Zaladon]], and the last surviving son of [[Tartarus]], had learned of UNSC plans to attack Zeta Halo. He would inform Atriox and several other high ranking Banished members. Before departing the meeting, Atriox placed Severan in charge of the remaining Banished forces who did not accompany Atriox to Zeta Halo{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET4|ET|Chapter=4}} consisting of two hundred clans and more than thirteen hundred warships.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET14|ET|Chapter=14}}{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=16}}

===Razing of Oth Sonin===
The Banished had united many Jiralhanae clans across [[Doisac]] and its moons,{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p446|Enc22|Page=446}} though not all clans. Many clans, including those on [[Warial]], continued to resist the Banished.{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p447|Enc22|Page=447}} While Jiralhanae infighting persisted, the Banished staged a defensive against the [[Created]].{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p446}} Upon the warmaster's return, the rogue [[AI]] leader [[Cortana]] ordered him and the Banished to surrender, and [[Razing of Oth Sonin|destroyed]] Doisac in response to his refusal by firing beams at it with several [[Guardian]]s.{{Ref/Level|Id=Raze|HI|Repository}}

Following the loss of their home planet, the Banished represented the largest surviving Jiralhanae military force under a single banner.{{Ref/Book|Enc22|Page=424}} Atriox and his Banished force comprised of Jiralhanae, humans, Sangheili, Unggoy, Mgalekgolo, and Kig-Yar traveled to [[Halo Array|Halo]] [[Installation 07]] where the Xalanyn species were secretly hidden and where the rogue Cortana presided.{{Ref/Reuse|SA}} Other Banished forces occupied the former human colony of [[Camber]] and took possession of several UNSC assets that had been left behind. They began to refit and repurpose the ruins into tools to serve their needs.{{Ref/Reuse|CFLore}} 

Before his departure, [[Escharum]] ordered Severan to destroy [[Earth]] in retaliation for the [[Razing of Oth Sonin]].{{Ref/Reuse|ET14}} Secretly, however, Severan was working for [[High Lord]] [[Dovo Nesto]], a [[San'Shyuum]] of the [[Order of Restoration]] who sought to restore the [[Covenant]] empire.{{Ref/Reuse|ET14}}

===Double attack===

In [[2559#December|December 2559]], Atriox's forces, who had arrived at Installation 07, ambushed the {{UNSCShip|Infinity}} and its escort fleet. The ship was boarded by Atriox and other Banished forces during the attack to retrieve [[CTN 0453-0]] in order to defeat Cortana and her Created empire. He also dueled [[Master Chief Petty Officer]] [[John-117]] and emerged victorious after tossing the [[Spartan-II]] into space.{{Ref/Level|Id=WG|HI|Warship Gbraakon}} A few surviving [[UNSC]] forces of the devastated fleet managed to escape to the surface of the ring and would continue to engage the Banished in guerrilla warfare. The Banished would come to occupy the ring and establish themselves on it.{{Ref/Reuse|CFNY}}

After Atriox arrived at the surface of Installation 07, he confronted Cortana who had been locked down by CTN 0453-0, a UNSC infiltration AI. Now a prisoner of Atriox and unwilling to give him the secrets of the ring, Cortana detonated part of the ring to prevent him from controlling it, seemingly killing the Banished warmaster in the process.{{Ref/Reuse|SA}} Atriox was thought to be dead, leaving [[War Chief]] [[Escharum]] in charge of the Banished who were stranded on the ring once it suddenly moved its location.{{Ref/Game|Id=OI09|HINF|HINF:Audio log#Outpost Intel 9|UNSC Audio log|Detail=Outpost Intel #09 - To Andrew Valleros}}

Also on the 12th, the Banished attacked Earth with 1,328 ships, far more than the Covenant had used in the [[Battle for Earth]] with Earth defending with its [[Home Fleet]] and [[orbital defense platform]]s. The battle drew two [[Guardian Custode]]s with a third Guardian joining soon afterwards. The Guardians attacked with their [[attenuation pulse emitter]]s, disabling a vast section of both sides of the conflict, leaving the remaining ships on both sides quickly scrambling to get away from the Guardians. However, the Guardians were suddenly deactivated following the destruction of Cortana on Zeta Halo, which [[Severan]] took to be the work of Atriox. Elated, Severan ordered all of his forces to pull back rather than taking advantage of the opportunity to destroy Earth, intending to secure [[Boundary Lithos|the]] [[Lithos]] on [[Boundary]] and return once the Banished were victorious.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET19|ET|Chapter=19}}{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET20|ET|Chapter=20}}

====Search for the Lithos====

At [[Boundary]], the Banished fleet established a defensive shell around the planet and were engaged by the {{UNSCShip|Victory of Samothrace}} and the three remaining ships of [[Battle Group Omega]], destroying two [[karve]]s and a [[skeid]] in the first pass, but losing the {{UNSCShip|Easy Does It}} in the process. During this pass, the {{UNSCShip|Hazard Pay}} scanned the planet and discovered more Banished vehicles and personnel on-station in [[Tyrrhen]] than most of the UNSC had seen since the [[Fall of Reach]].{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=23}} When ''Victory'' and Omega returned with the ''[[Shadow of Intent]]'' and ''[[Akkadian]]'', the Banished sent several dozen vessels to intercept them. Through superior tactics, the UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios ships destroyed several Banished vessels. The ''Victory'' received word that the UNSC was sending reinforcements in the form of the Fourth, Sixth, Ninth and Thirteenth expeditionary fleets to enable the ''Victory'' and Omega to finish their job which was to interface the key with the Lithos or destroy it in order to keep the Banished, Nesto and anyone else from accessing the Lithos. The tau spike from the arrival of the UNSC fleets -- nearly two hundred ships in total – spooked the Banished into breaking up their defensive shell into smaller fleets to counter it.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET27|ET|Chapter=27}}

On the surface, Banished forces led by Severan, [[Ectorius]], [[Dreka 'Xulsam]] and [[Gathgor]] excavated the location of [[Boundary Lithos|the]] [[Lithos]]. However, the other Banished leaders began to grow suspicious of Severan's knowledge of the Lithos and his actions in withdrawing from the attack on Earth. However, Dovo Nesto learned that UNSC ground forces, the [[Swords of Sanghelios]] were on their way and even with [[Cortana]]'s destruction, the Lithos still required a key and that the [[Domain]] had been built by [[Precursor|a predecessor race]] to the [[Forerunner]]s. Nesto revealed that he had eyes everywhere and learned that a human girl was the key to accessing the Lithos and the Domain.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET24|ET|Chapter=24}} Fighting through the sewers, Spartan [[Michael-120]] was severely injured by a Banished spike, but insisted upon continuing to fight.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=26}} While investigating human activity in a nearby barn, Severan's forces were attacked by [[HRUNTING Mark III (B) Cyclops|Cyclopses]] from the local militia, killing two [[Jiralhanae]] before the Cyclopses were taken down.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET28|ET|Chapter=28}} Banished forces led by [[Arxus]] were able to find and capture [[Chloe Hall]], suffering great casualties in the process, but also leaving [[James-005|James Solomon]] severely injured.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=29}}

However, a fleet from [[Sali 'Nyon's Covenant]] arrived as well{{Ref/Reuse|ET27}} and helped to push the UNSC forces back. The Covenant forces were let through the defensive shell because they had Severan's own fleet's clearance codes. The number of Covenant ships was great enough and they were everywhere once they got through the defensive shell that the Banished were unable to stop [[Sali 'Nyon]] from sending out detachments to claim the key to the [[Lithos]] for himself. The collusion between Nesto and 'Nyon caused Severan to realize that Nesto had promised the [[Sangheili]] what he had already promised Severan.{{Ref/Reuse|ET28}} 'Nyon himself made his way to the Banished encampment where Nesto revealed himself, surprising the members of the Eight who were on the ground as they were unaware of Severan working with a [[San'Shyuum]] and leading to a standoff that 'Nyon tried to defuse. Covenant dropships unloaded several waves of soldiers which converged on the group of leaders, creating a tense situation where the Banished now appeared to be outnumbered. The UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios team attempted to assassinate Nesto and 'Nyon, but they were betrayed by [[Blademaster]] [[Vul 'Soran]] and Spartan [[Merrick]] who injured [[Jai-006]] and [[Adriana-111]] and killed Spartan [[Stefan Vídalín]].{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=30}}

With this development and with the Banished only minutes away from reaching the Lithos, ''Victory'' was ordered to destroy the Lithos from orbit with a [[Magnetic Accelerator Cannon|MAC]] strike in order to deny it to both the Banished and the Covenant. [[Captain (NAVCOM)|Captain]] [[Abigail Cole]] had the ''Shadow of Intent'' attempt to warn the surface team of the incoming strike while ordering the remaining UNSC ships to provide ''Victory'' with cover to make the shot against the combined Banished and Covenant forces.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=31}}

The Banished and Covenant leaders were able to reach an uneasy peace, but Severan realized that he had been lied to and manipulated by Nesto due to not only his alliance with 'Nyon, but Nesto's utter disregard for Severan's ability to accomplish their shared goals despite all he'd pledged and was willing to jeopardize the War Chief's standing with Atriox to undermine it. Nesto's reaction to Severan's lack of respect confirmed that he saw the War Chief only as a pawn and Severan deduced that Nesto had promised 'Nyon the same thing that he had promised Severan: a position of authority in the resurrected Covenant, and a place at the head of the Covenant's military which 'Nyon's surprised reaction confirmed. When Severan refused to bow before the San'Shyuum's right to divinity despite the Banished forces being completely surrounded, Nesto attacked him with 'Nyon's energy sword, but the War Chief cut Nesto's arm off with one of his arm blades, causing battle to break out between the Banished and the Covenant,{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET32|ET|Chapter=32}} both on the planet's surface and in orbit.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET33|ET|Chapter=33}}

As the battle raged, James managed to catch up with Arxus and kill him, rescuing Chloe at the cost of suffering life-threatening injuries. James encountered Adrianna, but refused to give up Chloe to her, not wanting the UNSC to sacrifice the girl to take control of the Domain. After confirming that James had a way off of the planet, Adrianna agreed to tell ONI that James and Chloe had been torched by a Banished ravager with barely enough left to ID them.{{Ref/Reuse|ET33}} James took Chloe to his {{Class|Winter|prowler}} ''[[Cataphract]]'', but was tracked by Gravemakers under the command of Banished ''[[surdkar]]s''. James sent Chloe ahead while he stayed behind to hold the Banished off. Although one Gravemaker chased after Chloe, it was attacked by five ''[[panthedron]]s'' who were unable to catch the girl either. As the Banished hunting party closed in on him, James activated his [[MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/Mark V|armor's]] [[fail-safe detonation system]], killing James and the Banished warriors and destroying the Gravemakers.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=37}}

On the last of the escalating platforms of the Lithos, Nesto, 'Nyon and Severan took cover behind a series of vertical barriers, firing unrelentingly into each other's position. Phantoms from each side moved in and extracted the leaders, leaving the Banished and Covenant ground troops fighting each other without any sort of coordination or cohesion. The UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios team received contact from [[Rtas 'Vadum]] ordering them to evacuate before the site was destroyed by the ''Victory''.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=34}}

In orbit, the ''Victory'' was nearly able to get into position to fire before the Banished [[flagship]] ''[[Heart of Malice]]'' joined the fight, ramming the ''Victory'' off target and damaging the drive control system, rending ''Victory'' unable to maneuver in any way. However, ''Victory''{{'}}s speed and trajectory still put it in position to fire upon the Lithos. The remaining ships of Omega held off the Banished flagship long enough for ''Victory'' to get into position to fire. ''Victory''{{'}}s MAC successfully fired into the Lithos just before the UNSC flagship was rammed by the ''Heart of Malice'' again.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET35|ET|Chapter=35}} Thousands of Banished and Covenant were killed in the strike while the Lithos burst into a pillar of light that tore into the sky. Several dozen ships were vaporized by the Lithos' destruction while others were severely damaged, either cast adrift or sent on a collision course with the planet's surface.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ETAdjunct|ET|Adjunct}} The attack sent ''Victory'' plummeting to the planet's surface, but the ship's drive actuators unexpectedly came back online, allowing the bridge crew to level the ship out as much as possible before ''Victory'' crash landed on Boundary.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=39}} Between the naval battle and the crash landing, ''Victory'' lost about twenty-seven percent of her crew to the Banished, four hundred and eighty-two people.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=44}}

The shockwave from the strike caused both Severan's Phantom and 'Nyon's to crash. With the Lithos destroyed, Severan contacted the ''Heart of Malice'' and ordered the retreat of all of the remaining Banished ships. Taking an overturned Covenant Ghost, Severan chased down 'Nyon and Nesto as they escaped in a {{Pattern|Abatyar|Revenant}}{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=36}} to a parked Phantom.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=38}} Severan caught up with the two at the Phantom, killing the Revenant's driver and two guards. Severan dueled 'Nyon, ultimately decapitating and killing the Covenant leader. Before Severan could kill Nesto, he was stabbed through the back by 'Soran who left Severan to die as 'Soran and Nesto escaped in the dropship. However, Severan was rescued by [[Kaevus]] in a [[Trespasser]].{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=40}}

By [[2560#January|January 1, 2560]], [[Atriox]] and [[Escharum]] had disappeared along with [[Installation 07|Zeta Halo]] and all of the forces that they took with them. Severan was now kept alive by life-sustaining armor and worried that with their top two leaders gone, the Banished would be thrown into chaos, becoming a faction of squabbling warlords vying to secure and expand their own fiefdoms, reenacting the clan wars of old. Severan intended to give the Banished purpose, direction and hope and rally them together in the absence of their leaders. Severan would dedicate the Banished to hunting down Nesto and the countless undiscovered treasures in the galaxy, from the remains of the Covenant war machine, to the secrets of the Forerunners and the many mysteries that lay even beyond them.{{Ref/Reuse|ET46}}

===Occupation of Zeta Halo===

Despite the fact that [[Atriox]] valued Banished [[humans]]{{Ref/Novel|Id=DW6|HDW|Chapter=6}} and made statements denouncing genocide as "barbarism" with "no reward" which allowed the Banished to incorporate [[Jiralhanae|feuding]] [[Sangheili|species]] in the first place,{{Ref/Reuse|ROA4}}{{Ref/Reuse|HP}}{{Ref/Reuse|RoA2}} [[Escharum]] decided to go against Atriox's core beliefs that tied the Banished together and allowed his Jiralhanae to kill off many humans in the faction not responsible for the [[Razing of Oth Sonin]].{{Ref/Reuse|TRP20}} While Escharum declared the destruction of humanity,{{Ref/YouTube|Id=RiseOfBanished|hXrMkGXtk0c|Halo|Halo Infinite The Banished Rise}} he still allowed for some Banished humans to remain, notably [[Unidentified Banished human inspector|those]] who had earned enough respect.{{Ref/Reuse|TRP20}} Radically altered, the Banished under Escharum's leadership would expend valuable resources on revenge and his desire for a glorious battle,{{Ref/Level|Hi|Foundation}}{{Ref/Game|HINF|Id=Demon|HINF:Audio log#Escharum's Testimony 04|Banished Audio logs|Detail=Escharum's Testimony 04: Demon}} as opposed to pragmatism,{{Ref/Reuse|HP}} a decision which would ultimately lead his forces stationed around the [[Silent Auditorium (location)|shattered islands]] to ruin with many [[Bloodstars#Banished|high value]] [[Hand of Atriox|leaders]] dead in the ensuing conflict.{{Ref/Reuse|HVT}}

Seeking to fulfill part of Atriox's will, Escharum established the ring as the Banished's new home and also sought to free a Xalanyn known as the [[Harbinger]]. A [[Spartan-IV]] team led by [[Hudson Griffin]] attempted to assassinate Escharum, but were ambushed and killed with only Griffin being taken prisoner. Escharum concurrently sent [[Tremonius]] to lead an assault on the crashed {{Class|Mulsanne|light frigate}} {{UNSCShip|Mortal Reverie}} acting as the humans' base, both as a means of retaliation and to uncover Harbinger resting beneath its crash site. The Banished forces quickly overwhelmed the frigate killing and scattering the UNSC forces stationed around it, and began to excavate the Harbinger's [[cylix]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=TRP17|TRP|Chapter=17}}

Using a human [[Prisoner of war|prisoner]] named [[Lucas Browning]], Escharum awakened the Harbinger, and forged a begrudging alliance with her for the reformation of Installation 07. The Banished were complimented with the Harbinger's [[Gasgira]] troops known as ''Skimmers'',{{Ref/Reuse|Gasgira}} who were initially hostile upon release.{{Ref/Novel|Id=TRPp285|TRP|Chapter=32|Page=285}}

During [[2560#May|May 2560]], the Banished ship ''[[Ghost of Gbraakon]]'' was destroyed by [[John-117]], who had survived in space and been rescued by ''[[Echo 216]]''. Escharum was invigorated by his survival and welcomed him to a battle on his ring world.{{Ref/Reuse|WG}} The Banished bases [[Outpost Tremonius (location)|Outpost Tremonius]], [[Tower]], [[Annex Ridge (location)|Annex Ridge]], [[Armory of Reckoning (location)|Armory of Reckoning]], [[Forge of Teash (location)|Forge of Teash]], [[Horn of Abolition (location)|Horn of Abolition]], [[Ransom Keep (location)|Ransom Keep]], [[Redoubt of Sundering (location)|Redoubt of Sundering]] and [[Riven Gate (location)|Riven Gate]] all fell to John-117 and the [[Marine]]s he freed during the conflict. All high value members situated around the floating islands, many of which served as Bloodstars, were assassinated by the Spartan-II, along with the Hand of Atriox who were sent to kill him.{{Ref/Game|Id=HVT|HI|[[High Value Target]] missions}}

Seeking a legendary battle or a glorious death with his illness progressing, Escharum sent [[Blademaster]] [[Jega 'Rdomnai]] to kidnap Echo 216 to lure out the Spartan.{{Ref/Level|HI|The Command Spire}} Taking the bait, John-117 arrived for [[Battle of the House of Reckoning|the final showdown]] at the [[House of Reckoning (location)|House of Reckoning]]. Waves of Banished fought against John-117, only to be struck down.{{Ref/Level|HI|The Road}} Jega 'Rdomnai fought him as well and was defeated with his body mysteriously cloaking away. Escharum revealed himself to the Spartan in the room where Echo 216 was being held and a duel took place. Escharum and John-117 took shots at each other until the War Chief resorted to using the room to power a dome-shaped shield to protect himself. The Spartan deactivated the shield and continued to attack, resulting in Escharum pulling out his [[gravity axe]] for an even closer battle. After sustaining enough damage Escharum collapsed and told the Spartan that his death would inspire others before dying in his enemy's arms.{{Ref/Level|HI|House of Reckoning}}

The Harbinger would continue leading the remnants of Escharum's local forces, some Banished Jiralhanae saw his death as martyrdom and proclaimed to fight in his name. In a last ditch effort to protect the Harbinger in the [[Silent Auditorium (location)|Silent Auditorium]]'s central chamber, they attempted to [[Battle of the Silent Auditorium|defend her]] against John-117 where they were all killed along with her. After the Harbinger's defeat, other Banished forces remained in control of different parts of the ring.{{Ref/Reuse|SA}}

Unbeknownst to both the Banished and the UNSC, Atriox had survived his apparent destruction by Cortana, and had discovered the location of the cylixes in which the Forerunners had imprisoned the [[Xalanyn]].{{Ref/Reuse|SA}}

During the next three days, in the run up to  Escharum's funeral, the gathered forces of Escharum's prospective replacements filled the valley near the House of Reckoning where they celebrated, fought and feasted. Occasionally, the rage and discontent of those gathered spilled over into the murder of rival clans and even of their own kind.{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD6|EOD|Chapter=6}}

By June 3, the Banished on Zeta Halo still remained leaderless in the aftermath of Escharum's demise. The Banished began performing mass executions of human [[prisoner of war|POWs]] with some even turning on the human factions in the Banished's ranks. It was rumored that the Banished's leadership would be sorted out on June 4, the last day of Escharum's funeral. After learning of this, John-117 decided to take advantage of the power vacuum he had created and the [[Rubicon Protocol]] to sow chaos amongst the Banished and turn the tide back in the UNSC's favor.{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD1|EOD|Chapter=1}}

On June 4, the upper echelon of the Banished and thousands of their forces gathered at the House of Reckoning for Escharum's [[Funeral of Escharum|funeral]]. The Banished commanders in the running to take over consisted of [[Jiralhanae Chieftain]]s [[Ballas]] and [[Gallian]], [[Sangheili Warlord]] [[Val 'Hasumai]] and [[Jiralhanae Captain]] [[Denakrium]].{{Ref/Reuse|EOD6}} However, without the guiding influence of Atriox and Escharum, the Banished leadership fell back into base instincts, couldn't agree on a course of action and began arguing amongst themselves. After Gallian insulted him, Jega killed the Chieftain, causing fighting to briefly break out amongst the Banished troops. When Jega refused to kill Lucas Browning, 'Hasumai realized that the Blademaster wanted to use him to find out the secrets that the Harbinger had shared with the young combat medic, forcing Jega to flee. Once Jega's Phantom was at a safe distance, the Master Chief and [[Joyeuse]] destroyed the House of Reckoning with an [[Eris tactical nuclear weapon]], killing most of the Banished gathered there. Although some of the Banished might've made it out of the blast radius in pursuit of Jega, the shockwave would likely have torn some of them out of the sky. It was unclear who if any of the Banished leadership survived the explosion, further destabilizing the Banished with the loss of some if not all of their remaining leadership.{{Ref/Reuse|EOD7}}

The Master Chief, Joy and Esparza followed 'Rdomnai back to his base, [[Rdomnai Keep]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD8|EOD|Chapter=8}} On June 5, the Master Chief raided the base and rescued Browning.{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD9|EOD|Chapter=9}}{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD11|EOD|Chapter=11}}{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD12|EOD|Chapter=12}} Although consumed by his own need for revenge against the Spartans, 'Rdomnai decided to let them go, hoping that with a change of tactics and through tracking Browning, the Blademaster would be led to the answers that he sought about the Harbinger's secrets.{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD10|EOD|Chapter=10}}

Some of 'Rdomnai's forces later started to close in a large UNSC encampment on the stable part of the ring at [[Lifeworker Central]] which was protected by Forerunner [[dazzler]]s. Deducing that the Banished were after Browning, the Master Chief and his group left to continue their mission.{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD22|EOD|Chapter=22}}

Atriox reestablished contact with the Banished, resulting in a newfound resolve and confidence amongst the Banished with his reemergence.{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p423|Enc22|Page=423}} 

Several Banished affiliated human mercenary groups continued to operate in the [[Streets|crime-ridden streets]] of [[New Mombasa]] on [[Earth]], capitalizing on the city's proximity to Forerunner secrets for Atriox and the Banished.{{Ref/Reuse|CFEndings}}

As the Banished have a strong Jiralhanae presence, the Banished first began their expansion on [[Doisac]] as Escharum planted a Banished presence on the Jiralhanae homeworld with the hopes to reignite and accelerate their species' progress in military and political arenas.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22-446&447}} Following the Banished planting their foothold on Doisac paving the way to their rapid expansion, the UNSC began to observe that the Jiralhanae clans on Doisac and its moons are seeing an unusual level of power consolidation and cooperation that was attributed to the influence of the Banished, as the Banished worked to impress independent clans of their strength while eliminating their rivals.{{Ref/Reuse|H:OSFM2}}{{Ref/Reuse|H:OSFM5}} All the while, Chieftains loyal to Atriox worked to spread the influence of the Banished across Jiralhanae colonies.{{Ref/Reuse|H:OSFM2}}

This effort by the Banished culminated in the mercenary faction uniting the Jiralhanae clans across Doisac and its moons by 2559, with the notable exception of the moon-colony of Warial, as the Banished resisted the Created in their home system.{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22-446&447|Enc22|Page=446-447}}
Along with the Banished control of Doisac and its lunar colonies, the Banished had also conquered the resource-rich worlds the Jiralhanae were first settled on. These worlds were settled with Jiralhanae by the San'Shyuum to protect these worlds and their resources from ambitious client species of the Covenant, while also refraining from teaching these Jiralhanae how to leverage the resources of these worlds. The Banished are also known to use their own variant of [[Banished Drone|UAV]] to repair their outposts during the [[Second Ark Conflict]] and modify the {{Pattern|Emp'seam|Antlion}} to fire spikes instead of plasma. The Banished are capable of using their own portable shield, which is hexagonal-shaped with trapezoids making up the shielding and be active or not active at the user's request.

Key to the initial expansion of the Banished fleet were the appropriated Covenant vessels supplied by allied shipmasters or captured by Jiralhanae boarding parties.{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p461|Enc22|Page=461}} 

They have at least one {{Class|CAS|assault carrier}}, the ''[[Enduring Conviction]]'' as the [[flagship]] and once the largest Banished [[capital ship]] per [[Office of Naval Intelligence|ONI]], at least five {{Pattern|Ket|battlecruiser}}s,{{Ref/Reuse|ANE}} and at one point captured the {{Pattern|Ceudar|heavy corvette}} ''[[Elegy's Lament]]''.{{Ref/Reuse|HP}} Their ships have the ability to deploy bases for ground combat, such as [[Banished outpost]]s.

The Banished during their operations on the Ark also used salvaged wreckage from [[Truth's fleet]] that was left on the Ark. However, the loss of the ''Enduring Conviction'' left them unable to perform the kind of orbital bombardment that the {{UNSCShip|Spirit of Fire}} was capable of with her [[MAC]] gun.{{Ref/Novel|DW|Chapter=17}}

By [[2559#October|October 2559]], the Banished in the Milky Way have a formidable fleet including at least one former massive [[Covenant supercarrier]], at least one [[intrusion corvette]] and several [[Covenant destroyer|destroyers]] and [[Covenant cruiser|cruisers]] which were present in their search for the portal on Reach fielded by three Banished legions.{{Ref/Novel|SoR}} The Legion of the Corpse-Moon clan was known to house a small but growing fleet within their hidden outpost on the moon of [[Soirapt]].{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p447}} The Banished have also acquired a number of [[Drekar]]s, powerful and versatile stealth vessels secretly commissioned by the [[High Prophet of Truth]] himself as he laid the groundwork for the elevation of the Jiralhanae over the Sangheili that the Banished quietly sought to procure following clandestine raids on information cells and Covenant armories.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p461}}

As the faction grew  Atriox diverted resources into rapidly bolstering the size and scale of their fleet by utilizing both Jiralhanae and Covenant-sourced designs leading to the creation of the [[Karve]] and the [[Banished dreadnought]]. The Karve were originally used to patrol territory and ferry cargo prior to the Great Immolation, with contemporary Karves now forming the backbone of the Banished navy constructed using Kig-Yar shipbuilding techniques {{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p460|Enc22|Page=460}}. Banished dreadnoughts commissioned by the [[Irusk Workshop]] were built from repurposed and aggressively modified Covenant hulls and were integrated into service in 2553 and becoming the most common of the Banished's warships,{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p462}}, with hundreds of dreadnoughts across the Banished fleet.{{Ref/Reuse|ET4}} Many of these dreadnoughts, including ''[[Ghost of Gbraakon]]'', participated in the [[Battle over Installation 07]] in [[2559#December|December 2559]].{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22p462}} Dreadnoughts in particular could deploy modular Banished bases to the ground.

Prior to the [[Razing of Oth Sonin]], the size of the Banished fleet had expanded to comprise thousands of vessels.{{Ref/Reuse|ET4}} Following Doisac's destruction, the surviving vessels of the Banished fleet aside from those at Zeta Halo, [[Battle of Earth (2559)|attacked]] [[Earth]]. [[Iratus]] is an artificial intelligence construct created using a [[Jiralhanae]] donor and aligned with the Banished.{{Ref/Site|Id=S2StoryHub|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/halo-infinite|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Halo Infinite|Detail=Season 02 Lone Wolves - Story|D=06|M=05|Y=2022}} Iratus was created by the [[Lux Voluspa]] company as part of an effort to research artificial intelligence creation utilizing brain donors from species aside from [[human]]ity. This included Jiralhanae donors; a decision considered by researchers "LV038" and "LV106" as something that was "always going to draw some attention eventually."{{Ref/Reuse|S2StoryHub}} The Lux Voluspa facility was ultimately breached by a cyberwarfare attack, with an intrusion package deployed using internally-sourced encryption and displaying a Jiralhanae retrieval signature. The originators of this attack were later indicated to be the Banished, who were able to steal the Iratus [[Armored matrix|AI matrix]] from the facility.{{Ref/Generic|Id=LuxVoluspa|[[Halo Infinite Lux Voluspa]]}} In [[2559]], the Iratus AI was present inside the Banished shipbreaking facilities on [[Camber]]. When [[SPARTAN-IV program|Spartan-IV]]s [[Sigrid Eklund]] and [[Hieu Dinh]] were deployed to the facility, they were able to trap Iratus inside of Dinh's [[neural interface]], compromising his armor and cognitive functions.
