In her personal journal, Dr. Halsey there notes, "That lie about all the Spartans gathered here, save for Gray - will that come back to haunt me?" This strongly hints to the existence of SPARTAN-IIs not deployed to Reach. In addition, she notes that the candidates who were killed by the augmentations were cryonically frozen and may have later been resuscitated. She expresses her fear for what the Office of Naval Intelligence might do with their own "secret" SPARTANs, seemingly suggesting the origins of Team Black. She also notes that some of the SPARTANs who were crippled later had their injuries healed, enabling them to return to active duty, possibly fixing the "Reach" discrepancy.

In the bonus content of the 2010 reprint of Halo: First Strike, Fred is interviewed by an ONI officer during the Battle of Earth. The new content states that there were 21 SPARTANs under Fred's command, 6 of whom were wounded and 4 of whom were killed when their Pelican was shot down. This is wrong as there were 3 members of Red Alpha and Gamma, 6 in Delta, and 11 in Beta. Also 4 members died when jumping out of the Pelican. This adds up to 28 total Spartans (including Fred). Taking into account the 3 SPARTANs in space, (John, Linda, and James), as well as Jorge, there were a total of 32 SPARTAN-IIs present during the Fall of Reach. If taken at face value, this brings the total number of known SPARTAN-IIs who survived the augmentation procedures up to 54. A video on Halo Waypoint later reiterated this number.
In the bonus content of the 2010 reprint of Halo: First Strike, Fred is interviewed by an ONI officer during the Battle of Earth. The new content states that there were twenty-one Spartans under Fred's command; a video on Halo Waypoint later reiterated this number. Of these Spartans, six were wounded and four were killed when their Pelican was shot down; however, this conflicts with the fact that Alpha and Gamma teams each had three members, Team Delta had six members, and Team Beta had eleven members, unless these numbers have been retconned.<!--Even if these sizes of Alpha, Gamma, and Delta have been retconned, Halo: Reach confirms that Beta-Red had eleven members.--> This adds up to twenty-eight Spartans on Red Team, including Fred. Taking into account the three Spartans in space, as well as Jorge, there were a total of thirty-two SPARTAN-IIs present during the Fall of Reach. If taken at face value, this brings the total number of known SPARTAN-IIs who survived the augmentation procedures, or were rehabilitated or resuscitated, up to fifty-four.
