Rebelled against Atriox and the Banished

Yapyap, self-proclaimed Yapyap the DESTROYER, is an Unggoy leader who rebelled against the Banished during their battle with the crew of the UNSC Spirit of Fire on Installation 00.[2][3]

Biography[edit]

Yapyap was a low ranking Deacon in the Covenant's Ministry of Sanitation before being kidnapped by the Banished. Yapyap rose through the chain of command within the Banished due to being slower than the other Grunts at avoiding eye contact when a job needed to be filled.[2]

Yapyap was among those who accompanied Atriox to Installation 00 in late 2558. After discovering the Throne of Woe and reclaiming the High Prophet of Truth's crown for himself,[1] Yapyap rebelled against the Banished in favor of locating the fabled Golden Methane Hydrate Mines of Sabator, hidden somewhere on the Ark. Throughout his rebellion, the Throne of Woe continued to communicate with him, telling Yapyap that the Ark belonged to the Unggoy. Yapyap managed to lose more Unggoy in battle than were even carried to the Ark in the first place. The Throne of Woe would somehow produce Unggoy reinforcements for Yapyap after he argued with and kicked the Throne.[2]

Because of Yapyap's forces dealing with the Ark's defensive systems, Atriox tolerated Yapyap's activities on the Forerunner installation, but with Shipmaster Let 'Volir now leading the Banished forces on the Ark, it is unlikely that Yapyap's rebellion will be allowed to continue any longer.[1]

Equipment[edit]

Yapyap uses the point tank model of the Unggoy combat harness, engraved with multiple carvings. He also wears the crown of the High Prophet of Truth with a crude scale model of Installation 00 tied onto it.[1]

In-game information[edit]

Halo Wars 2[edit]

Yapyap the DESTROYER is a comedic leader available for use in the multiplayer component of Halo Wars 2. He was the final standalone DLC leader to be added to the game, released in 2017.[4]

Production notes[edit]

In Halo Wars 2, Yapyap is mostly presented as a comedic character with a heavy non-canon leaning to much of the abilities and units he can use.[2] Although the more overtly comedic overtones are non-canon, Yapyap and his rebellion are fully-canon entities within the Halo universe.[1] In accordance with this, Yapyap is responsible for the non-canon ingame "Yappening" events originally introduced as an April Fool's event in Halo Wars 2, before being continued into The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite. The character also was given a real account] on Twitter, which posted sporadically between 2017-2020 in Yapyap's signature comedic style to comment on various Halo franchise posts.

Winning three multiplayer matches as Yapyap in Halo Wars 2 awards the player with the You met me on Reach! achievement, which may indicate that Yapyap participated in the Fall of Reach.

Yapyap was voiced by Nick Ardizzone, then-Narrative Designer at 343 Industries.[5]

Trivia[edit]

Yapyap is first mentioned in a random humorous line by an Unggoy in Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST.[6]
