Removing very high-res screenshots[edit]

Hey Subtank, is there really a need to remove very high-res screenshots? There are HUD details (the suit BIOS, for example) that can't be discerned at lower resolutions. Users can choose to open lower-res versions of the image anyway if they don't have the bandwidth to load the full picture, so I don't think reverting to 1920px is necessary. -Kronos101 16:54, 2 May 2012 (EDT)

That last sentence is the issue: by clicking the link to the image, the page will load up the original size. This is set by default by the wiki. This can, however, be prevented if the user ha set a size limit in their preferences... but the likelihood of anyone actually setting a size limit is very very little. Of course, if we can change the settings to view it only at 1920px as the default size, then this wouldn't be an issue... pester Steve/Porplemontage about it perhaps? :P 16:59, 2 May 2012 (EDT)
Doesn't clicking the image link get users to the file page (e.g. File:Halo4BattleRifleProfile.png) instead of the image itself ([1])? -Kronos101 17:05, 2 May 2012 (EDT)
Whoops. Major apologies. Just reset my preferences to default and you're right. Gonna restore the images now. Subtank 17:06, 2 May 2012 (EDT)
Hah, my signature returned to default. :P — subtank 17:07, 2 May 2012 (EDT)

RE: Would you kindly...[edit]

Templates and stuff[edit]

Hey,

Couldn't help but I noticed that you're kinda in charge of templates and stuff. I have several I want to discuss about. Mind contacting me back?— HAcame 21:04, 16 May 2012 (EDT)

Im under a Time Restraint, so help me fast please.[edit]

Dear Subtank, I Need your help very very bad. I noticed that you uploaded an image of the AI known as "doppler", therefore that must mean you own either issue #3 or #4 of "Halo: Fall of Reach - Invasion". If you do, as the evidence suggests, I Need your help. I am making a 3D animation for a school project, so I'm on a tight deadline, and for the animation I need images of the Covenant "Super-Cruiser" AKA "Sniper Ship", the ship that was sniping UNSC ships, and eventually was destroyed by the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. I require at least a single image, preferably more, of this ship which should appear in issue 3 or 4 of "Invasion". I would be extremely grateful if you can help me. My E-Mail is Spirit-0f-fire@shaw.ca (that is a zero in "-0f-") you will be credited in the video's credit's. I am desperate for these images, so please help, I'm at a loss looking for them on the internet, so please, I'm desperate --The Grave Mind 09:39, 24 May 2012 (EDT)

Template:Article quote[edit]

Hey Subtank, since you are the last person who edited the Template... I think there's some issue with the Template:Article quote. If the template is placed before an infobox, there's no problem. However, if it's placed below the infobox, like Mister Zanzibar over here, then the quote overlaps the infobox. This might be another webkit problem like last time, but since I'm not sure, I came here to consult the MediaWiki-wise Subtank (sigh, I'm horrible at puns). —S331 File:Bubbleshieldhud.svg|14 (COMMission LogProfile) 10:50, 29 May 2012 (EDT)

Webkit... don't know why there's always a problem with it. Fixed... but it won't be in the centre anymore.— subtank 12:25, 29 May 2012 (EDT)

Template[edit]

Could you please tell me why you deleted the template for my signature? It keeps my sig from messing up like it will be when this is published.--Shade Link 14:44, 26 June 2012 (EDT)

Because personal signatures do not belong in the template namespace, but in a user-subpage such as the one you already have. Also, unless you plan on requesting a username change, please link your signature back to your userpage, instead of redlinking it to Parax.--Spartacus (Talk | Contribs) 14:49, 26 June 2012 (EDT)

Reach super carrier file/Covie alloy[edit]

Can you re-upload the orginal version of this file: http://www.halopedia.org/File:Reach_-_Supercarrier.png as a separate one, as it's current version is an entirely separate image. Also, both should be present on Long Night of Solace's article, as that's the ship in the image. 98.24.14.97 11:23, 14 August 2012 (EDT)

Also, can an article be made for the Covenant alloy used on all their objects? I think it's notable to point out how it always has a geometric pattern and exhibits 2 colored iridesence.98.24.14.97 11:29, 14 August 2012 (EDT)
File reuploaded. As for the Covenant alloy, I don't see why not.— subtank 17:28, 14 August 2012 (EDT)

ohai subtank, its me, Terra-287 from halo nation, I require your help. The look to the site is going to be updated so I've been making a logo for the site, and since it appears you made the original logo it means you might have the halo reach font used in it. I need your help if you do have the font typable so that I may use it for the new logo. Please Respond to me through my email "Spirit-0f-fire@shaw.ca" (that is a "Zero" in "0f") please reply as soon as you get this. --The Grave Mind 21:52, 29 September 2012 (EDT)

Apologies but I no longer reply to requests/comments/anything-else through email. Also, I don't have Reach font (actively searching for it since 2010). I can tell you how to recreate it. The first word, "Halo", is an image of its own from the official sites. "Nation" is created using CloneWars truetype (Google helps), with a bit of photoshopping (such as reusing the official "A" and "O" for "Nation).— subtank 22:44, 30 September 2012 (EDT)

Penguins[edit]

Well, it seems my sudden-code-knowledge-gaining-powers failed to manifest this time visiting your talk. Is it possible to create a page background that's a gif? Remember that Assembly background I made once? Would it be possible to make a similar one from a .gif?

Also, this might interest. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 01:58, 4 October 2012 (EDT)

It is possible, but it is not practical. Assuming that the GIF is very pretty**, the load will be a burden to those with slower connection or using mobile browsers (assuming that the website does not have a special mobile theme). In some cases, it might even cause browsers to hang. ** "pretty" implies that the filesize is 2mb or more.subtank 02:20, 4 October 2012 (EDT)

Hm. Yep, I hate when gifs cause that to me. I suppose then it'd only work with something simple... Tuckerscreator(stalk) 02:34, 4 October 2012 (EDT)

Finded Things[edit]

Firsties, I found this quote from ONI: Sword Base.

Dr. Halsey: "Zealots? You're certain?"
Jorge052: "Their armor configuration matched."
Noble Six: "Shield strength, too."
— At SWORD Base

Six wouldn't have any need to point out the Elites' shield strength matched with those Zealots unless it varied from them and other ranks.

Secondly, on the Navigation toolbar on the side of the page, one of the links leads to a dead redirect. Specifically, it's "Mike" under "Main Book Characters" under "The Universe". It should be changed to Michael-120, as currently it links to the dead "Mike (SPARTAN-II)". May you fixies please? Tuckerscreator(stalk) 19:02, 21 November 2012 (EST)

Yup. Someone showed me that quote after that discussion. And any fixing relating to Navigation toolbar, MediaWiki and all others should be directed to the Administration. Don't have access to those pages anymore since 2010. :P — subtank 02:08, 27 November 2012 (EST)

Spartacus fixed it soon after I asked, so it's already handled. Who showed you the quote, incidentally? Tuckerscreator(stalk) 02:36, 27 November 2012 (EST)

I don't remember who it was. Guess I shouldn't delete the messages in the messageboard... :/ — subtank 03:49, 27 November 2012 (EST)

About the gallery[edit]

I did that because the wiki's been glitching and reducing the width of galleries. Is it only on my computer? Or is someone going to fix it? Tuckerscreator(stalk) 03:44, 4 December 2012 (EST)

Glitching and reducing gallery width? I've checked with IE10, Firefox 17 and Google Chrome (godknowswhatversion), so it might be just your computer. By default, the width should be no wider than ~190px and the image in the box shouldn't be larger than 160px. Specifying the width in the gallery tag would override this, so this might cause this "Glitch" you're experiencing. Maybe you can provide screenshots of various articles and their galleries? — subtank 04:04, 4 December 2012 (EST)

Here are the screenshots. The left one is what Halsey's page looks like when the code reads only <gallery>, the right one is what it looks like when I specified the width.

File:Gallering.png|left|thumb|250px|Only 4 pics per line.]] File:Galsey.png|thumb|250px|Restored to 5 again.]]

From my knowledge, it's been doing this for about three months now. Thel 'Vadam's page was the only one that didn't reduce the gallery width and that's because it was using that code. And nobody had any problem with it. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 11:51, 4 December 2012 (EST)

Does it mess up the page for other users? Because it makes it look normal again from my view. If it's just superfluous code then it should be harmless. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 16:57, 4 December 2012 (EST)

Thanks for the screenies. As I said before, the default width for the images in Gallery tag is 160px. It became five pics per line because you specified a width of 155px. That reduction allows five pictures to appear. — subtank 02:19, 6 December 2012 (EST)

Exactly. So the reason why I applied that code is so that it could stay five pics per line, rather than be reduced to four by the default. With that in mind, can the code be restored? Tuckerscreator(stalk) 17:01, 6 December 2012 (EST)

It's simply scaling issue (although not really an "issue") than a glitch: it shows three pics per line for those using 1024px, four pics per line for those using 1280px (I guess you're using this screenwidth) and five pics per line if you're using 1366px (my current display). With that in mind, there is no point of specifying the width in the gallery tag since you would have to do it to all galleries in all articles. This looks like a personal preference than a site-wide "issue". If you prefer to have five pics per line, just add in the following to your nimbus.css page:
li.gallerybox {
   width: 190px !important;
}
That code should work... I hope. — subtank 19:12, 6 December 2012 (EST)

Ah, understood. Is there anything else I should add to the ccs page before that code is added? Because currently mine is blank. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 19:31, 6 December 2012 (EST)

Nope. Just add the code, press save and purge your browser's cache (how-to instructions on the css page). — subtank 19:33, 6 December 2012 (EST)

I ask because they are two CSO models, and I've seen screenshots of the other one in game, and want to know if this is something from in game, or a render. signxb.jpg 19:32, 26 March 2013 (EDT)

Librarian's Rest[edit]

Hey. About Librarian's Rest, I've rewritten the History section so it's more focused on the events that take place there. At this point I think everything's fine, hope that's much better. Imrane-117 (talk) 18:15, 2 July 2013 (EDT)

Better than what I wrote. :P — subtank 09:29, 3 July 2013 (EDT)

Where does that policy come from?[edit]

"Images should only be from the cutscenes or official screenies."
— Ye.

I've never seen that policy cited anywhere. Where do we get that from? It's a bit of a problem as it invalidates UserWiki:ScaleMaster117|almost all the default images]] Stephen got me. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 11:56, 15 August 2013 (EDT)

Not a policy; more of an editing style for player-controlled character. It was derived from practices made on both John-117 and Rookie, out of the concern that the player's actions in the game might not reflect the actions of the character in the Halo universe in the same event. Take File:NobleSix_BansheeStun.jpg|this image]] as an example, some players might use the grenade launcher to shoot the Banshees but there are others who ignore them. It is impossible to tell if Six actually engaged the Banshees since it is not in a form of a cutscene, a scripted event, or a required objective. Since it is largely gameplay, the only safe use of screenshots should be from official screenshots (but this can be ignored if contradicted, outdated or otherwise) and cutscenes. Certain in-game screenshots can be considered as "safe" use such as File:NobleBeach.jpg|this image of the beginning of LNoS]] (e.g. directly after the cutscene). Not all of Loftus' images are for naught.— subtank 13:12, 15 August 2013 (EDT)

My dumb computer sometimes can't display Halopedia pages properly and instead causes complicated things like backgrounds, tab boxes, and infoboxes to not show up, with only the text on a plain white background. It doesn't seem to be a browser problem, as it glitches regardless of which browser I use. About the randomiser effect[edit]

Hi Subtank, I've been doing some of my own tests with the randomiser proposal and I'd like to keep trying things out but my knowledge on css and js is rather limited. I basically have two questions. 1) Do you know of any way to pair a particular logo to a specific background or backgrounds. 2) Is there a way to implement another background image (preferably tileable) behind the banner? Thanks for any help you can offer--Soul reaper (talk) 12:57, 18 August 2014 (EDT)

  1. 1 - I know of a method but it would be based on the day of the week (i.e. Theme 1 on Monday, Theme 2 on Tuesday). So, essentially this would be limited to only seven paired logo/backgrounds. You want to try it out?
  2. 2 - That's simple. Refer to my CSS page and check this dif. TL:DR, just remove "x" from repeat-x. — subtank 09:26, 24 August 2014 (EDT)
I'd definitely like to give it a go if it's not too much trouble.
Is there a way to have both a header as we do now, and a separate background image behind it?--Soul reaper (talk) 11:49, 24 August 2014 (EDT)
Sorry for the late reply. I'll fetch the code now.
As for your second query, to my knowledge, I don't think that is possible as there is only one element for the background (#body{}) unless you have a script that would replace the background element. — subtank 00:14, 6 September 2014 (EDT)
Check out my nimbus.css and nimbus.js page for a time-based background changer. This code works on a daily basis. — subtank 00:31, 6 September 2014 (EDT)

Image Issue[edit]

Hi Subs. Hope you're lurking about. I was wondering if you could help me with an image gallery issue. Basically, I want to arrange File:Halo3-MasterChief-MA5C.png|these]] File:Halo3-MasterChief-DualSMGs.png|three]] File:Halo3-MasterChief-DualPistols.png|pictures]] side by side at a roughly 300 height. May or not not add a fourth picture. Below are several attempts of mine to arrange them as such, but each attempt has so far not succeeded. Usually the pictures just end up overlapping or not tall enough. The code for each is hidden below; selectively de-hide each on Preview and maybe you can find how to solve the issue. Also of note is that this is supposed to go inside a tab box on my user page, in case that has anything to do with it. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 01:38, 29 March 2015 (EDT)

Should've considered tables. :P — subtank 10:59, 29 March 2015 (EDT)

That resolves it. Thanks, and congrats on the Mythic! Tuckerscreator(stalk) 16:27, 29 March 2015 (EDT)

Another editing issue[edit]

I made this navbox not too long ago; Would you know a way to make each title section a different color? So all I've found makes them all the same color. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 17:29, 23 April 2015 (EDT)

Use the following:
|group1style= for group1 field
|group2style= for group2 field
... and so on. I take it you're planning on making them of different colours? Avoid making them eye-soring! :D — subtank 00:26, 25 April 2015 (EDT)

Template issue[edit]

Hey Sub, there's a issue with this template that I was hoping you may be able to solve. The "view" link for the main template does not link back to the template (it redlinks to an un-created article), however the "edit" and "discussion" links correctly link to the template. The sub templates included within the main template have the opposite problem, where the "view" link correctly leads to the template, but the "edit" and "discussion" links lead to "Template:Template:Template Name". I tried fixing it, but that only created the redlink issue I mentioned above. Thanks for your time.--Spartacus TalkContribs 12:44, 13 March 2017 (EDT)

Hey Spartacus, fixed your template. It's due to the use of the "colon" (i.e. :) which interfered with the operations of the Tnavbar template which creates the v - d - e on the upper left of the Navbox template. I recommend avoiding using colon as part of the template name. I took the liberty of moving the subtemplates. I would also recommend using codes for future subtemplates because (1) they're codes and not intended to be digested by readers and (2) easier to type out. — subtank 11:26, 14 March 2017 (EDT)
Okay, sounds good and thanks for fixing it. Also, I got the message about the template transclusions so I'll have Spartabot take care that.--Spartacus TalkContribs 13:54, 14 March 2017 (EDT)

Pages I created[edit]

Maybe get rid of the dropship pages but what I did for the ships is the exact same thing as was done for the Covenant cruiser at Longhorn Valley. And I had nothing to do with that one. In fact, if I hadn't found that one, I wouldn't have tried.--WarGrowlmon18 (talk) 15:19, 5 November 2017 (EST)

As for notability, aside from Keyes' dropship, the ships I created pages for did play a big role in the games. One was responsible for the whole fight at SWORD Base and kind of acted like the final boss of the level. Same for the corvette at New Alexandria. The battlecruiser was notable for its role in the battle at the shipbreaking yards and if you think about it, was at least indirectly responsible for the death of SPARTAN-B312 due to him having to stay behind to shoot it down. And it posed a major threat to the Autumn. Alpha-Nine's Phantom was a major part of two of the ODST game's levels and played a major role in the team's escape. And had major objectives surrounding it.--WarGrowlmon18 (talk) 15:25, 5 November 2017 (EST)
