From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Rocket88

Hey, Brendan here again letting you know that I did create an account. This wiki is small, but I'm sure I can help out by adding pages, info, etc. See you around the wiki!--Rocket88 10:46, 17 August 2010 (EDT)

-Just created pages for Noble Team and every member of it. If you have any other page ideas, let me know.--Rocket88 12:23, 17 August 2010 (EDT)

That's great man, thanks. Feel free to create pages for whatever subjects you're most interested in. And if you know anyone else who likes Halo and supports independent wikis, I'd love to have them on board. --User:Porplemontage/sig 14:44, 17 August 2010 (EDT)

Xbox Live

Hey, would you mind if I sent you a friend request on Xbox Live? If I remember correctly from your Super Mario Wiki page (thanks for making it by the way, the wiki I mean) your Gamertag is porplemontage (no caps?). My gamertag is GhetoRussianSpy so don't think I'm just some random guy friend requesting you. If your list is full or you don't want me on your friends list let me know by tomorrow so I won't send it.--Rocket88 11:05, 18 August 2010 (EDT)

Patroller

It depends, what do I have to do as patroller? If it requires coming to the wiki every day, then sorry. I can't make such a harsh commitment, and sometimes I just don't have internet access for long periods of time. Thanks for asking, and if I can come maybe every other day with absences periodically then sure, why not! Anyway I'll send you a request on Xbox Live at the least. Any good at Halo 3 Campaign? I'll be finishing the level Halo tomorrow on Heroic if you want to join, feel free.

Internet

Yeah for instance I'll be going on vacation for a week soon. Other than that I might just be busy with schoolwork Monday-Friday about once a month, or taking occasional day trips on long weekends. I would be alright as long as there was no, say, responsibility that I would be here every week. I probably would be about 8/9 times, but it's the other 1/8 that worries me. What sort of vandalism resorts in a block, by the way?--Rocket88 18:54, 18 August 2010 (EDT)

Sounds Good

I'm planning on adding a lot of the material that this re-born wiki is lacking to date. Any content I feel deserves a ban, I shall give a temporary ban or permanent in severe or repeat cases of vandalism. Thanks for thinking of me. Are there any other other Patrollers/Admin (I'm assuming that you're at least a patroller) that I should know about on the wiki? If so I'll send them a message to give them a brief on my contributions and promotion.

P.S. Look out for a page on the Spartan-II and Spartan-III program coming very shortly... --Rocket88 19:20, 18 August 2010 (EDT)

Categories

This sounds dumb, but how do i add categories to the new pages that I'm adding to the wiki? Once you let me know, I'll be more than happy to create a boatload of new categories. Don't worry though, I won't go overboard...
--Rocket88 19:48, 19 August 2010 (EDT)

Page Title

Well I got back recently and I'm back to adding new pages and whatnot. Anyway, I incorrectly title my newest page Jetpack without the space. I don't know if I have any control over page names, but if anyone did, it would be you. That's why I'm here. You could alter it to either Jet Pack or Jet-Pack, whatever suits you is fine with me.

Social profile bug report

"Send a Gift link appears to be invalid. Click on it to see what I mean (I believe gifts are meant to be created with a right called "Gift Admin" in order for the system to start working). Also, just my two cents but consider disabling the "Foes" feature. I recall that being done back in 2008 due to it causing conflict amongst users (along with a few other changes that were made to the points system but that's irrelevant here). Regards,

Error creating thumbnail error

Hello Steve, member of a fellow Anti-wikia skin alliance site.

I am having a problem with deadrising.wikia.com (another site which left wikia)

RE: http://www.halopedian.com/Forum:Moving_in/bug_reports#Error_creating_thumbnail

your solution was: "the directory had the wrong owner and couldn't be written to."

Can you explain how I go about fixing this?

I posted this question also on Mediawiki.org any help would be most appreciated. Thank you. Anno1404 10:18, 29 December 2010 (EST)

Well, after the move some of the thumb directories had the owner of root instead of nobody. I just go log into the server using WinSCP and change the owner on the problematic directory to nobody. By the way, your Monaco skin looks great, any plans to release that? --User:Porplemontage/sig 12:11, 29 December 2010 (EST)

Videos

Is there any current discussion on whether or not to add in the Video Embed Tool? As this wiki doesn't currently use one, we ended up with a lot of redundant links to them, which littered the WP - most/all of the ones remaining on the list are there because we cannot edit userpages due to another extension stopping us.-- Forerunner 17:03, 23 February 2011 (EST)

I think this is it.-- Forerunner 17:08, 23 February 2011 (EST)
Try editing userpages now. It would be redundant to have more than one way to embed videos. --User:Porplemontage/sig 17:12, 23 February 2011 (EST)

Well,

Subtank suggested I go over to you so that's what I'm doing. Here's the details.

Halopedia is glitching for me all of a sudden. First, it took an incredible amount of time to load up when i first opened it, then it gave me some kind of error message and a partial page. I tried again and it let me in, but it cut the whole top third of the screen off, preventing me from seeing the top banner and accessing the edit button. The only reason I'm able to edit now is because I've had to work around it by manually typing in the "edit" url. I have no idea why this is suddenly happening, as it's nothing like I've ever seen before, and this is a new computer, but it's doing that. On any other wiki I visit, however, it's normal, so I expect it's a specific glitch. I don't know if anyone else has this, as obviously they can't edit unless they know to type in the URL.

Here's what it looks like: File:Glitch_Screen_Pic.png. Is this a glitch on the wiki, or is there something on my computer I need checked? Tuckerscreator(stalk) 15:55, 30 April 2011 (EDT)

Is everything working now? Most of that glitch is due to the CSS not loading. When that happens, try a hard refresh (CTRL+F5) to see if the problem is on your end or the server end. We had some downtime today and while the site was coming back up there may have been some issues. Fortunately the cause of the downtime has been identified and fixed. --User:Porplemontage/sig 18:28, 30 April 2011 (EDT)

Well, at the time your message arrived, it still wasn't, but then I tried turning off my computer, leaving it alone for a time, then got on later and suddenly it's fixed. How weird. 19:56, 30 April 2011 (EDT)

Pricing

Hi. I wanted to ask you how wikis are priced on the bill. Wikipedia allows redirects based on misspelling and improper grammar (eg. KINg of England) because, as they say, redirects don't cost much. I figured that you would be able to help me work out if this is a specific value (eg. 5c per 100 redirects) or based around a complex system of page-size.-- Forerunner 15:32, 27 May 2011 (EDT)

There is no cost per redirect or page size. I pay for the server and the data on that server doesn't affect the price. --User:Porplemontage/sig 04:26, 28 May 2011 (EDT)

How'd you get that deal? Most websites pay for data, rather than the server. Vegerot (talk) 11:06, 29 May 2011 (EDT)!!

It's not uncommon. For example, just search for dedicated server hosting. --User:Porplemontage/sig 11:28, 29 May 2011 (EDT)

Redirects

There seems to have been an unfortunate return of redirects to the drop-down search menu: Newly-made redirects will appear in the list. Do you know what might have happened and if it can be fixed?--The All-knowing Sith'ari 18:42, 29 January 2012 (EST)

Auto refresh feature

Hey, Porplemontage. Spartacus says that your the guy to go to about an idea I had in mind. I was wondering if it would be okay to add an Auto refresh feature to the Recent Changes page to make it easier on users to patrol recent article changes and such. (By "add", I mean someone like you, who actually knows something about Java Script; not me.) Vadske (talk) 20:49, 30 November 2012 (EST)

Sure, I think we can give that a try. --User:Porplemontage/sig 21:34, 30 November 2012 (EST)

A Mass Effect Wiki

Being that you have two sci-fi wikis under your belt, I was wondering if you would consider making a Mass Effect Wiki under a different, unique name (similar to how the Half-Life Wiki is called the "Combine OverWiki", and how the Fallout Wiki is called "The Vault"). I know that there is already a Mass Effect Wiki, and I've tried editing there before, but they were too strict for me (which I think is the reason why they don't have as many editors as one would think a wiki about Mass Effect would have), and their style isn't quite to my liking, compared to the styles of your wikis. I also think I would get along better with the editors that edit your wikis better than I would the ones I've seen at Wikia's Mass Effect Wiki.
71.53.196.185 16:31, 2 September 2013 (EDT)

I'll keep it in mind. Any name suggestions? --User:Porplemontage/sig 16:34, 2 September 2013 (EDT)
Glad to see you'll at least consider it! :) I don't have any name ideas as of yet, since the idea is kind of fresh. 71.53.196.185 16:56, 2 September 2013 (EDT)
Also, can I use the name "Alpha" here? It's already taken, but the person who used it seems inactive. I know sites like Wikia wouldn't allow this simply because a user is inactive (another stupid Wikia policy, IMO), but I thought you wouldn't be as strict ;). 71.53.196.185 21:57, 3 September 2013 (EDT)
That username was registered and made some edits only about two weeks ago. I'm afraid you're going to have to pick a different name.--Spartacus TalkContribs 22:02, 3 September 2013 (EDT)
(reset indent) As I have played Mass Effect before, I'll try to find an appropriate name for a Mass Effect Wiki that I (and we) can remember that would fit, if there is still interest in starting one. --Xamikaze330 [Transmission|Commencing] 00:48, 4 September 2013 (EDT)Xamikaze330
I think I may have two viable names for a Mass Effect wiki: either Spectrepedia, or the Codexpedia. Personally, the Codexpedia would make more sense because according to the Mass Effect wikia, it is main source for background information on Mass Effect. But that's just my personal opinion. But they're good names nonetheless. So, I hope this helps. :-) --Xamikaze330 [Transmission|Commencing] 11:38, 11 September 2013 (EDT)Xamikaze330
Why not The Codex? The domain masseffectwiki.net is available. Failing that, perhaps .info instead? — subtank 13:36, 11 September 2013 (EDT)
Not an altogether bad idea, either. But I thought we were trying to go for a "pedia" name type thing? --Xamikaze330 [Transmission|Commencing] 14:13, 11 September 2013 (EDT)Xamikaze330

Well, similar to "The Vault" and "Halo Nation", the Wiki doesn't have to actually include "wiki" or "pedia". And subtank and Xamikaze, those aren't bad names at all; better than the one I was thinking of (I came up with "Nothing"... literally). I hope you're still considering this, Porple. 67.237.183.78 00:36, 21 November 2013 (EST) (This is the same anon that proposed this by the way; dynamic IP)

Honestly, this is on my list of potential projects but it will take a few months yet before I make a decision either way. There are other things I'll be working-on and monitoring before I can decide if this is a good idea. --User:Porplemontage/sig 06:02, 21 November 2013 (EST)
So, how goes the process? Decided not to do it? Still considering it? Already decided? Sorry if it seems like I'm rushing you, Porple; I just think a franchise as good as Mass Effect deserves a wiki better than that crap at Wikia... 67.237.177.47 21:22, 22 December 2013 (EST)
There is no process yet. I need to see how other projects pan-out before even thinking about it. Maybe I'll know by the time Mass Effect 4 is released. --User:Porplemontage/sig 21:38, 22 December 2013 (EST)

Any new thoughts about this, Porple? 184.5.231.84 12:41, 7 September 2014 (EDT)

Nope, sorry.--User:Porplemontage/sig 17:01, 7 September 2014 (EDT)

It's really beyond me as to why you would make a "Destinypedia" wiki – a wiki with a name held by 2 other wikis – but not a Mass Effect wiki (under a unique name, of course) – a wiki whose only competition would be Wikia's god awful Mass Effect Wiki, which has terrible design, messy referencing, crappy formatting, unlicensed files and ridiculous policies. Seriously, what's holding you back from making the wiki? Is it money? Are you fearful of Wikia's superior SEO? Those are literally the only two thing I can think of that could possibly be holding you back from making an ME Wiki of your own, because the actual wiki at Wikia would be of no competition at all for a wiki under the guidance and maintenance of a competent editor and proprietor like yourself (you alone are a better administrator than any of the assholes at Wikia's ME Wiki), on top of the help I'm sure you would get from users here (which includes myself). 184.5.228.76 19:18, 7 October 2014 (EDT)

You were just missing some commas between sections. --User:Porplemontage/sig 02:24, 11 June 2014 (EDT)
Ah, thanks for the fix! I need to brush up on MediaWiki...--Spartacus TalkContribs 12:54, 11 June 2014 (EDT)

Well then...

It's quite evident now that you don't intend on making a Mass Effect Wiki. I like what you're doing with your little network of wikis, but, to be honest, you don't have much variety in the wikis you host. How about an Uncharted Wiki? Wikia's Uncharted Wiki is in a state of disarray and I'm sure that, with just a few competent editors, we could easily supersede their wiki in quality and quantity; unlike with the proposed Mass Effect Wiki, we wouldn't have a lot of competition starting off. Yes, this is another wiki proposal, but this one has tenfold more potential. Seriously, go take a look at Wikia's Uncharted Wiki and I'm sure that, right off the bat, you'll see that making an Uncharted Wiki of your own would be a great venture, especially with Uncharted 4 on the horizon. So... how about it? 184.6.3.204 22:00, 23 December 2014 (EST)

Considering (from what I know) fans of the Xbox platform or at least spend more time on it and work with Halo, it'd be hard to transition to something like Uncharted just for the heck of it. You'd have to build it from the ground up (look at Destinypedia. Still a lot of holes) and don't forget paying for the servers. What would be in it for the Mass Effect/Uncharted community? Sure, Mass Effect has a sizeable fan base, but not as big as Halo and they haven't been clamoring for a new wiki. Uncharted IIRC does not have much of an EU, just the games so it'd be fairly redundant to have another wiki just for the heck of it. While Halopedia is a successful wiki, it doesn't mean the success made here can be replicated so easily especially when there are established wikis. Halopedia works because of a dedicated fan base and the large EU Halo has. SamGall (talk) 22:35, 23 December 2014 (EST)
In regards to Mass Effect, for a series that started in 2007, the fanbase is quite big. You have to see the bigger picture with franchises. Mass Effect is regarded by many as being superior to Halo, Star Wars, and Star Trek already. Once the franchise really starts to pick up momentum (movies, even more comics, more games, etc.), it will easily surpass Halo as a franchise, as it is known for its superior quality, storytelling and gameplay (the latter being very subjective; the former two practically being an official consensus). Point being: Mass Effect has more potential than Halo, while the latter is dropping in popularity.
In all honesty, Destinypedia was a terrible venture on Porple's part, in my opinion. Not only does the wiki have heavy competition at Wikia (which has a "Destinypedia" of its own (good luck with SEO there...), as well as a larger community and more activity), but Destiny, as a franchise, has very little potential. Many thought of the game as overhyped, flawed, repetitive and lacking in lore. I honestly doubt the franchise will last 10+ years as Activision intended.
Uncharted is very similar to Halo; it is practically to Sony what Halo is to Microsoft. There's already a movie planned and the franchise still has room to grow (despite U4's subtitle being "A Thief's 'End'"). Unlike Halo, however, Uncharted isn't losing steam.
It is beyond me as to why Porple hasn't started a Mass Effect Wiki of his own already, as the potential of that franchise is boundless. That's his call. I'm willing to help with an Uncharted Wiki, as it's a franchise with huge potential as well, but there's way more potential in a Mass Effect Wiki that actually lives up to the standards of a wiki (unlike Wikia's Mass Effect Wiki; seriously, go take a look at their wiki and you'll see that they have terrible wiki standards). If Halopedia can compete with Halo Nation, I'm preeety sure a professional Mass Effect Wiki would be able to compete with the excuse for a wiki at Wikia. (Not to mention that Wikia's Mass Effect Wiki lacks a huge amount of editors due to the dictatorship there.)
If by "EU", you mean communities (I don't know what EU is, sorry), then I understand where you're coming from, in regards to Uncharted. Your point doesn't apply to Mass Effect, however; despite lacking as many communities as Halo does, the fanbase is still large and relatively new. I mean, Mass Effect 3's multiplayer is still active for Christ's sake.
I really didn't get where you were coming from with your "what would be in it" question. What do you mean? A wiki is meant to provide information to its readers, plain and simple - it would offer information. You also have to consider the fact that the Wikia wikis pertaining to these two franchises aren't that great either. For example: Halopedia is widely regarded as being superior to Halo Nation (fact). People prefer Halopedia's skin (really, Oasis is a godawful skin), more basic and readable color scheme (white background/black text/blue links), better written and quality articles and last, but certainly not least, the lack of content-breaking advertisements; we could offer the fanbases of these respective franchises a vastly superior wiki.
Oh yeah, and I just make the proposals. It's up to Porple if he wants to create and host a wiki or not. 184.6.3.204 23:40, 23 December 2014 (EST)

Hey. I'm not trying to be the next Wikia - I host the wikis I want to host. Sorry if I lead you on, sorry if you don't agree with my choices. To make this easier, I decided that I don't take requests. Happy holiday --User:Porplemontage/sig 00:08, 24 December 2014 (EST)

Copy/paste glitch

I've been having a glitch lately. Whenever I use the "paste" command, the page crashes and I have to refresh, losing the edit in the process. Switching to another browser doesn't help; neither does using the browser commands instead of the keyboard shortcut. And it's really annoying to have to type out reference links manually. Any idea how to fix it? Tuckerscreator(stalk) 03:07, 14 December 2015 (EST)

I really don't know. Something is up with your computer. Did you install or change something recently? --User:Porplemontage/sig 06:54, 14 December 2015 (EST)

I upgraded to OSX 10 El Capitan, but that was at least a month ago, before this started. It's not a constant glitch; I just tested now and was able to copy/paste just fine, but it is recurring. It doesn't seem to affect any other websites. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 13:09, 14 December 2015 (EST)
