UNSC Navy uniforms

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Revision as of 20:40, July 22, 2012 by Braidenvl (talk | contribs) (The similarities between the color-coded uniforms of the UNSC and the BOBs are deliberate, (and very overt), and are thus notable.)

Members of the UNSC Navy wear a variety of dress and service uniforms for the purposes of identification, formality, and practicality.

Dress uniform

White dress

The full dress uniform, used for ceremonial affairs, differs little from those of the United States Navy in the 20th and 21st centuries. It consists of a white jacket, white trousers, and a peaked cap for males and a tricorn hat for females ranked Petty Officer and above. Both hats are decorated with an officer crest; a silver shield over two crossed gold fouled anchors, surmounted by a silver eagle. Those ranked Commander and above wear gold "scrambled egg" oak leaves on their caps, while flag officers may wear aiguillettes with the jacket. Medals and ribbons are worn on the left-hand side of the uniform.[1][2][3][4]

Black dress

A full-black dress uniform, similar to that of the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, is also used. This version features a black peaked cap, at least for males, which bears insignia. As with the white dress uniform, epaulettes are worn on the shoulders, while badges and ribbons are worn on the chest. Rank insignia is also displayed on the cuffs.[5] It is possible that this uniform is reserved for somber, funerary occasions, as such uniforms were worn by all in attendance, including the officiating commander, at the dedication of a memorial "living monument" after the Human-Covenant War.[5] However, the white dress uniform is also known to be used under such circumstances.[4]

Service uniform

Command uniform

There are at least two major versions of the command uniform. One version consists of a long, light gray tunic and a matching pair of trousers.[note 1] The wearer's surname is displayed on the right breast; rank insignia is displayed high on the left breast, with the ship emblem displayed immediately below and ribbons beneath the emblem. Epaulettes are worn on the shoulders, though they do not display rank insignia.[6][7][8]

The other known command uniform is usually blue gray,[2][9][note 2] though the variant worn by flag officers is white and resembles the standard white dress uniform.[2][3][4] This version is also comprised of a long-sleeved tunic and matching trousers. The wearer's surname is displayed on the right breast and ribbons are worn on the left; flag officers also wear medals on the right breast below their ribbons. Rank insignia is displayed on each shoulder board, as well as on either side of the collar and on the cuffs. A magnetic pistol holster in mounted on the right thigh. A name tag displaying the officer's last name is mounted on the right hand side of the uniform while ribbons are worn on the left hand side. Rank insignia is displayed on the shirt cuffs, collar, and shoulder boards. Flag officers also wear peaked caps with this uniform.[2][3][4]

Combat-ready uniform

The combat-ready uniform[10] is worn by both commanding officers and junior crewmembers.[11] It consists of a double-breasted olive drab tunic, bearing the seal of the UNSC Defense Force, with the wearer's surname printed above the seal. It is worn with matching trousers with cargo pockets, a belt-worn pistol holster, and a baseball-style cap, also bearing the UNSCDF seal.[11][12][13] The combat-ready uniforms of ship commanders bear the ship emblem on the right shoulder. Medals and ribbons are not worn with this uniform.[11][12]

A more austere version of this uniform features the wearer's name on the left breast. Rank insignia are not displayed on the shoulders, and UNSCDF affiliation is also not displayed. A cap is not worn with this version.[14]

Working uniform

Service coveralls, known as the working uniform, are the basic uniform worn by UNSC Navy personnel while on duty.[15] Enlisted rank insignia is worn on the upper sleeve.[16] Most working uniforms are comprised of a light gray shirt, matching trousers, and a belt; these uniforms also have darker sections that display the UNSC insignia and overall resemble the combat-ready uniform.[7][17] Others are comprised of a single jumpsuit and are colored based on the wearer's technical specialty: red, green, and blue are the most commonly used colors.[2][note 3] With both versions, the wearer's name is displayed on the left breast.

Trivia

The color-coded working uniforms seen in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 3 are clearly inspired by those worn by BOBs in the Marathon trilogy. The crewmen who wear these uniforms also resemble the BOBs in personality and sometimes quote famous Marathon phrases, including the iconic "They're everywhere!" In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, however, all Navy personnel aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn wear gray two-piece uniforms which resemble those seen in Halo Wars, Halo: Reach, and later media.

Notes

  1. ^ This section describes Captain Keyes' uniform as it appears in Halo: Reach and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
  2. ^ This section describes Lieutenant Commander Keyes' uniform as it appears in Halo 3. Terminal 9 in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary shows that Miranda wore said uniform circa 2550, suggesting that her uniform's appearance in Halo 2 has been retconned.
  3. ^ This section does not list all the colors seen in Halo: Combat Evolved, as all the working uniforms in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary are gray and those seen in Halo 3 are red, blue, or green.
