When the ship mysteriously arrived at Installation 00, Matthews was part of the Marine complement assigned to the newly-established base Fort Jordan. When the base was attacked by Jiralhanae Warlord Ristyx, Matthews found himself amongst a small group of survivors led by Corporal Kyla Emmett, though he was soon killed in action.
