Kusanagi was a 2nd Generation "smart" AI construct used by the UNSC during the Battle of Jericho VII.

Name

The AI is named after a Japanese legendary sword. This could be a reference to Bungie's running motif of naming important AIs after mythological swords; the names of both Cortana and Durandal, the principal AI in the Marathon series, are based on this convention, although the two are more than tangentially connected as both are named in an inscription on Cortana's namesake.
