The Core of the Ark (Installation 00) appears to be a planetoid which may have been taken from the Milky Way galaxy as it was sustainable for life. The Ark itself was built around it and it would have been used as raw material for constructing the Ark and other Shield World installations.

The Core by any other method.

The Core was probably originally located within the Milky Way galaxy, but was moved by the Forerunners. However, it is possible that it was an extragalactic "rogue" planet; not gravitationally bound to any stellar system.

The Planet itself is almost hidden by clouds and is covered with storms. It is roughly 4255 km in diameter.fact It may have been taken from the Milky Way by using a Micro Dyson Sphere to transport it to the Ark. It might have been an inhabitable planet before it was stripped down for raw materials. The Core may have an effect on the environment around it and help give an atmosphere to the Shield Worlds that are constructed around it.

Along with the massive Sentinel population found around the Ark, the Core has an extra, albeit passive defence. It is equipped with a barrier shield which can be raised to protect both the Core and the Foundry (the industrial infrastructure which supports the creation of replacement Halos) from attack by Flood. At least one superluminal communications array (read: faster-than-light radio) is also included within the barrier's confines.

Both the Core and the Foundry are protected by an energy shield which is designed to stop the Flood from entering the Foundry. A small section of it is disabled in The Covenant to gain access to the Citadel but the Flood make a new foothold there when High Charity crash-lands on the Ark. If the Core survived Installation 04 there is a chance that Sentinels would repair the Ark.

The core of the Ark as viewed from one of the Ark's arms

Along with the massive Sentinel population found around the Ark, the Core has an extra, albeit passive defence. It is equipped with a barrier shield which can be raised to protect both the Core and the Foundry (the industrial infrastructure which supports the creation of replacement Halos) from attack by Flood. At least one superluminal communications array (read: faster-than-light radio) is also included within the barrier's confines.

The Covenant Prophet of Truth raised this barrier in 2552, either intentionally or accidentally. A small section of it is subsequently lowered by a joint UNSC-Covenant Separatist assault force in order to allow access to the Citadel.
