The smoke grenade is a canister-type grenade that produces smoke upon detonation in service of the UNSC.

Like signal flares, the smoke grenades are used for a variety and diversity of reasons. They are typically used to signal for pickup after a mission, or a request for an equipment drop, or even a need for emergency evacuation. Different reasons appear to have different colors of smoke attached to them; for example, blue smoke is used to signal for pickup. A type of training smoke grenade was commonly carried by Orbital Drop Shock Troopers during the Fall of Reach and the Battle of Mombasa in 2552. Three of these grenades were typically attached to the ODST armor's belt by attachment connectors on the canister's lid.
Smoke-producing flares are used for a variety and diversity of reasons by the UNSC. Different reasons appear to have different colors of smoke attached to them. There are a variety of smoke-producing items, none of which has yet been seen in any Halo game in the trilogy or Halo Wars. This is most likely because then you will be able to hold 10 grenades instead of 8 (2 Spikes, 2 Fragmentations, 2 Plasma, 2 Incendiary)

Production notes
*Signal Flare: "Smokers" are used to alert allies of a friendly position. They utilize thick, green smoke.
In Halo: Reach, the serial number M45A771B is printed on the canister; since the same serial number is printed on the 40mm grenade (albeit mirrored), the M392 DMR, and the MA37 assault rifle, it is likely all four items share the same decal sheet.

*Smoke Canister: These are used to signal for pickup after a mission, or a request for an equipment drop, or even a need for emergency evacuation. They create thick, blue smoke. These are also referred to as "smoke grenades."

List of appearances
*Smoke Bomb: These are used to cover an area with smoke for a soldier so they can cross an area while reducing the risk of being injured. They create thick, White yellow like smoke. These are also current day "smoke grenades" used by all major military forces such as the U.S. Military, S.A.S. and other various armies and militias.(Not officially discovered in a Halo novel but is likely used by the UNSC.)
