Kawn's Theme is the sixth track of the Halo Season One Original Soundtrack.
Overview[edit]
The piece begins with a solo piano playing a simple, lyrical, and slightly melancholic melody; gentle and reflective. Gentle and peaceful woodwind enters, providing a warm, sustained harmonic bed underneath the piano, adding depth and a sense of longing, establishing the main theme as the piece slowly builds anticipation. Then, a full symphonic ensemble enters, slowly reaching for a powerful swell with a rich, lush and layered orchestration; low strings and brass provide powerful foundation, woodwinds doubling the melody to add color. The main theme, previously introduced by the piano, is now carried by the high strings in a soaring, sweeping statement while the piano shifts to a supporting role, playing flowing arpeggios. The character of the piece evolves into to something more heroic as the brass section, mainly French horns, become prominent. The strings still lead -- carrying a lush and flowing theme. This is the piece at its most rhythmically complex. There's a powerful moment where it reaches a choir-like crescendo, elevating the music to a level of awe and significance before it quickly subsides. Everything gets pulled back after the crescendo, leaving strings and woodwinds to carry a soft, rythmic, almost playful version of the main theme. French horn joins with its mellow voice to elevate the theme to a resolution, giving it a sense of reflection. Low strings emerge and carry a broader melody, piano faintly heard in the background. They fade out with a peaceful resolution that leads to a trenquil coda.
