Ship designs were dynamic for the Forerunners. As such, classifications weren't based on incorporated systems or role, but rather on its formative nature within the era it was constructed.{{Ref/Reuse|encpg380}} The Forerunners grouped [[warship]]s into orders of battle based on defensive and offensive capabilities. This manifested as numbered orders for ships.{{Ref/Book|Id=encpg380|Enc22|Page=380}}

 

The [[Builder]]s, [[Miner]]s, and [[Lifeworker]]s all operated ships.{{Ref/Reuse|enc22pg378}} [[Builder Security]]{{Ref/Reuse|enc22pg282}} and the [[Warrior-Servant]]s also operated numerous warships.{{Ref/Book|Enc22|Page=381}}

After the [[Great Purification]] of [[97,445 BCE]], [[Keyship]]s played a role in the Reintroduction of species to their [[planet|homeworld]].<ref>''[[Halo Legends]]'', [[Origins]]</ref> One Keyship, the ''[[Anodyne Spirit]]'', was hijacked by [[Mendicant Bias]] and would end up crash landing on the [[San'Shyuum]] homeworld of [[Janjur Qom]].{{Ref/Site|D=01|M=6|Y=2020|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/universe/characters/mendicant-bias|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Universe - Mendicant Bias}} This ship would be later seen as a [[religion|religious]] artifact{{Ref/Site|D=01|M=6|Y=2020|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/universe/vehicles/dreadnought|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Universe - Dreadnought}} to the species and would later become part of the [[Covenant]]'s [[city|holy city]] of ''[[High Charity]]''{{Ref/Level|H2|[[Gravemind (level)|Gravemind]]}} along with a {{Class|Fortress|vessel}} from [[Tuluk'katho]].{{Ref/Book|Enc22|Page=226}}

Numerous other Forerunner ships ended up being buried, like [[Babd Catha Forerunner vessel|one]] under the [[Babd Catha Ice Shelf]] on [[Reach]],{{Ref/Level|HR|[[The Package]]}} [[Relic|one]] buried on [[Installation 05]],{{Ref/Map|H2|Relic}} and one buried in an asteroid in the [[Marcey system]].{{Ref/Novel|Halo: Saturn Devouring His Son}}

 

During the [[Created uprising]], several Forerunner vessels were repurposed by the [[Created]] to help instill their rule. This included [[Acolyte-class harrier|Acolyte-class]] [[Harrier-class vessel|harriers]] as well as at least one {{Class|Fortress|vessel}}.{{Ref/Novel|Out|Chapter=23}}
