The assault followed the unexpected shutdown of the installation's [[Portal at Voi|portal to Earth]] by [[Cortana]] almost a month prior.

==Prelude==
On [[2558#October|October 28, 2558]], the [[smart AI]] [[Cortana]], leader of an [[AI]] conglomerate known as the [[Created]], arrived at [[Earth]] with a [[Forerunner]] [[Guardian|Guardian construct]]. Firing an [[EMP]] blast at the planet, Cortana caused the shutdown of the [[Portal at Voi|Excession]] near the city of [[Voi]], a [[slipspace portal]] leading to an ancient extra-[[Milky Way|galactic]] Forerunner sanctuary known as [[Installation 00]], or "the Ark." As such, the [[United Nations Space Command]] research teams on the installation's surface found themselves stranded.
