The Ascetics are an order of warriors within the Sangheili culture with deep ties to ancient beliefs. They were fervent and defended the purity of their faith. They maintained their own military force, the Ascetic Guards.
The Ascetics were a Sangheili group which rose back to power after the Great Schism. With the new sovereignty of the Sangheili, comes the revival of the Ascetics. Because now, more than ever, the Sangheili culture depends upon their resolve and their decisive and swift actions for stability. As the physiological embodiment of purity, their presence promotes feelings of stability, confidence and order and lead the Sangheili by example. They promote confidence in those loyal to the state and fear in those who would undermine it.

Ascetic priests continued to recruit worthy Sangheili warriors into their order with the intentions of keeping the ideals alive within the Covenant. Ascetics would then construct new temples and homes in, what was at the time, a desert on Sanghelios.
