Unidentified UNSC scanning device

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

The unidentified scanning device, activated.

"Scanning device is activated."
John-117

This unidentified scanning device is a piece of equipment used to detect signal frequencies, specifically, weak signals with a short radius. In order for the scanning device to work, the operator must get close to be able to read any signals in the area.[1]

Overview

The scanning device was utilized by the team of SPARTAN-IIs, consisting of John-117, Frederic-104, Solomon-069, and Arthur-079 during the Raid on the Third Fleet of Glorious Consequence, using EVA Booster Frames. It was used to track and isolate the signal frequency of the package. The cunning Covenant commander of the fleet was able to fool the scanning device's sensors and make it appear as if there are multiple signals that, incidentally, would lead to multiple traps, because the false signals are decoys. Master Chief figured out that the Covenant knew what the SPARTANs had come for, and thus deduced that the only real signal is coming from the Covenant flagship.[1]

Notes

Based upon the information available, the scanning device is probably deployed either aboard the Booster Frames, or deployed onto the hull of a target vessel, in this case, a CCS-class battlecruiser or Covenant assault carrier. It can also be inferred that the Covenant were able to fool these devices by possibly rigging an antimatter charge with a signal transmitter programmed to emulate the same frequency of Dr. Halsey, and the bomb itself programmed to detonate once the false signal is investigated.[1]
