The Spartans found a strange Forerunner artifact on Sigma Octanus IV. It was in a museum in one of the cities, and the Covenant were doing everything they could to protect it. The Spartans shut down the Covenant operation and took the scans of the artifact. These scans were theorized to be a star chart of some kind, and the theory was proven correct by Cortana and Dr. Halsey. One set of symbols were coordinates to the system where Halo was located, and another were direct coordinates to Reach.
