The SPARTAN-II Program was a part of the SPARTAN Program designed to create human super-soldiers by putting them through mechanical and biological augmentation. This program contained over 35 successful augmentation and training performed on the SPARTANs. The most famous of this bunch was the Master Chief, or John-117 as his service tag reads. There were many SPARTAN-IIs killed during the battles for both Reach and Harvest. One probable death was that of Jorge-052 who served with Noble Team at Reach during the Covenant Invasion.

These elite soldiers were abducted from their families at the age of 5 to be but into training for their eventual dawn as SPARTAN-IIs in battle. The preliminary augmentation tests began around the age of 14, and some were killed or left permanently scarred by the harsh procedure. The last SPARTAN-II was the Master Chief, who is listed as MIA. In fact all KIA SPARTANs are listed as MIA for one should know that"Spartans never die, they're just missing in action. For the case of the Chief, he was indeed only MIA and seen drifting towards an unknown planet.
