The Ranking System in Halo: Reach is based on Credits (cR) earned through Forge, Multiplayer, Campaign, and Firefight matches. Credits are earned after every game, and you earn extra credits for medals earned during the match, (e.g. Double Kills) victory bonuses, commendations, and Daily/Weekly challenges. There are currently 50 ranks. [1]

Credits earned towards your rank can be used to purchase armor pieces from The Armory. You will see that when you rank up you will be able to see items that you can't yet purchase, these are pieces you can purchase in a few ranks. Note that Credits spent on armory purchases do not decrease your rank. However, Credits (cR) earned from any other feature (Forge and Custom Games) are significantly lower than those awarded for playing multiplayer via Xbox Live or Campaign for online accounts only. However, any account that has never been connected to Xbox LIVE will not have a decrease in the amount of Credits(cR) obtained for each gametype played.

Trivia

  • The ranks after Lt. Colonel, Grade 3 are not confirmed (nor denied) by Bungie, as they will be officially released after the Halo Reach community reaches a total of 117 Million daily and weekly challenges completed. Bungie's online engineers have predicted that this community challenge will be completed sometime in early November.
  • Players who reach the rank of Lt. Colonel, Grade 3 before the removal of the level cap will still be able to earn additional credits. Upon the removal of the cap, players will be promoted to the correct rank (e.g., if you gained an extra 160,000 cR, then when released you will be promoted to Commander Grade 2).
  • After the level cap has been lifted, more armour will be available, such as EVA [C], Haunted helmet and Commando
