Major John Smith was an Office of Naval Intelligence scientist working aboard the ONI-commissioned prison vessel Mona Lisa in October 2552. While aboard he studied several Flood-infected Sangheili in the hope turning the Flood into warriors for the UNSC. Whether ONI approved of this is unknown. When the ship was overridden by the Flood, he remained hidden inside a small panic room until he was discovered by Sergeant Zhao Heng Lopez's squad. He later killed Private Mahmoud with a knife and injured Lopez, escaping aboard their Pelican, betraying the squad, the majority of whom would later die.[1]
He was likely court martialed after his escape, as Captain Tobias Foucault of the prowler Template:UNSCship planned to have him, or he could have been killed in an act of unofficial "swift justice".
Trivia
- It can be said Smith is the main antagonist of "The Mona Lisa, as he his experiments led to the Flood outbreak on the Mona Lisa which was responsible for the deaths of the ships crew, prisoners and the majority of Lopez's team.
