Some juvenile Anglers inside their study tubes.

The Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa, known to humanity as Angler, are lizard-like creatures that were native to Erebus VII.

History

Study by humanity

After humanity discovered the Erebus VII, some juvenile of these creatures were captured and studied in an ONI research facility. They were detained in tubes filled with an orange fluid, where they remained after the facility was later abandoned.[1]

Anatomy, physiology, and behavior

Vaguely similar to lizards, the Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa are 5 meters long, and have a gray and dome shaped skull blending back into a fan of six horns.[2] Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa's eyes are located beneath the thick frontal ridge of their skull, which was set above a small, curved, bony arch, which protects an inset nose.[2] Directly beneath it, their mouths feature sharp, angled teeth in the front and long rows of fangs along its jaws. Two short horns grow from each side of their upper jaws, and their chin juts out into a sharp horn.[2] Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa have long, draping muscled limbs with curving talons, which helps them to climb in Erebus VII's forests; the Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa can also adopt a bipedal position.[2]

Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa hunt in packs, being able to revise and modify their hunting plan almost instantly. While hunting, they attract their prey into a trap by mimic sounds perfectly, even being able to mimic human voices; the sounds they imitate do not come from their mouths, but probably projected by their inset noses.[2] The Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa can also mimic light to attact preys.[2][3] These creatures are smart enough to know when their tactics don't work and change them in response, like when destroying any communication device ONI scientists had on their base.[3] When Rion was captured by a Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa pack, they also removed any equipment Rion had.[3]

When the Eiyaa-Mahtuhaa trap their prey, they spit a neurotoxin into their eyes, which acts as a neuromuscular relaxant and paralize their preys.[2][4][3]

Production notes

These species went unnamed till it was confirmed by Kelly Gay[5] and Jeff Easterling on March 23, 2021 that they were the Anglers in the novel Halo: Point of Light.[6]
