Diego Garcia

Diego Garcia is a small tropical island in the Indian Ocean of Earth, about 1,000 miles south of the southern India coast and far east of the "African Horn". It houses a UNSC military base.[1]
History
The island has housed a military base since the 1970's. In 1941 RAF (British Royal Air Force) Gan was built near there and was shut down in 1976, to become Gan Internation Airport. In 1965, the Chagos Archipelago (a group of islands which include Diego Garcia) became a British Indian Ocean Territory and continued to be during the 21st century.
Battle of Earth
The base launched the first counterattacks against the Covenant when they invaded New Mombasa in Kenya, Africa in 2552 during Battle of Earth. Later in the battle, a Covenant capital ship was sent in to destroy the base. It is unknown whether it succeeded in doing so.[1]
Production note
Diego Garcia was mentioned in the Halo 2 E3 demo as being the base of the "405th", a Marine unit that became A Company in the finished game. Diego Garcia's existence as a military base, with units involved in the fighting at Mombasa, was later made official by the Halo Encyclopedia.
