Communism was a political ideology founded upon social equality by the revolutions on Earth in the 20th and 21st century. Communism originated from scientific materialism pioneered by the socialist writings of Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels in the 19th century, achieving worldwide popularity as Socialist and Communist political parties formed in most countries. Global prominence of Communism solidified in the 1917 Bolshevik revolution by Vladimir Lenin and his foundation of the Soviet Union in 1922, the largest nation in history prior to the United Earth Government. The Soviet Union was ultimately dissolved in 1991 as a result of economic collapse, following almost 50 years of global struggle known as the Cold War. Other countries to survive as Communist states following the Soviet collapse were Yugoslavia, North Korea, China, Laos, Vietnam, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Angola, and Cuba.

Hundreds of years prior to the events of the Halo games, underground Neo-Communist groups were known to active by the mid-22nd century. Neo-Communist hard-liner, Vladimir Koslov, and his Neo-Communist movement called the "Koslovics" fought against the United Nations during the Interplanetary War of 2160 - 2164, and ultimately lost.[1]
