New Jerusalem was a large human Outer Colony world in the Cygnus system.[1] The city of Mount Haven was located on the colony.[2][note 1]
History
It was discovered by the Covenant late in the Human-Covenant War in September 2552 and was known to be defended by the 26th Marine Expeditionary Force, who suffered 'near annihilation' in the Battle of New Jerusalem. Upon arriving on the planet, the Covenant began to search for Forerunner artifacts. During the battle, several Orbital Drop Shock Troopers went rouge in an attempt to steal a large supply of gold from a bank in the city of Mount Haven. However, when children were discovered in the bank's vault, a dispute began between the ODSTs. Some wanted to call in a Pelican dropship to rescue the civilians, while others wanted to abandon them.[3] Gage Yevgenny, having seen enough people die in the war, took a Pelican and retrieved the artifacts the Covenant was looking for. Large amounts of Covenant soldiers and rouge ODSTs followed him, however all perished when he detonated a Shiva-class nuclear missile inside of his dropship.[4]
Following the battle, the UNSC forces retreated from the planet, leaving it to be glassed by the Covenant.[2] The Rookie fought at New Jerusalem as part of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Force, before transferring to his current unit.[5]

Notes
- ^ It has been confirmed in a comment by Tobias Buckell here that the rookie in Dirt is the same character as The Rookie from Halo 3: ODST. Thus, the battle depicted in the story has to be the Battle of New Jerusalem, as it was the last battle in which The Rookie participated before the Battle of Earth.
