UNSC ships other than the Spirit of Fire have their visible MAC cannons mounted on the prow, conceivable to counter the massive recoil with the ship's engines. Theorectically, ground support fire from orbit would require the supporting ship to face it's prow at the planet so that the impulse from firing the mac cannon wouldn't push it out of orbit, using it's engines to counter that force.
