Infection is a multiplayer gametype in Halo 3. It is the official Zombie mode after its popularity as a custom game in Halo 2. The object of the game is for the humans to stay alive as long as possible while the zombies try kill every human. The number of players starting out as Zombies ("Alpha Zombies") can be changed in the options and are selected at random. When a zombie kills a human player, he/she is "infected" and thus becomes a zombie. When there is just one human left, he/she is declared "Last Man Standing".

One way Infection is commonly played is that players will make custom maps with Forge where the humans have a strongpoint equipped with weapons, grenades, equipment and vehicles to defend against the zombies.

On October 31, 2007, a specialized Halloween matchmaking playlist was available, which played this game mode with precisely 13 players (it being an "unlucky" number).

General Tips

Zombies are often set to spawn with the classic Energy Sword.
  • Most game hosts will make the zombies stronger than humans; look out for zombie's having super speed and more resistance to bullets, there have also been games in which users have made fortified positions with forge which are near impossible to breach and setting the zombies health down to 25% resulting in one shot one kill, this is often frustrating for zombie players and eventually becomes boring for human players...but, this mode has been known to bring on a strong sense of team work on the Infected side if they're going to breach the humans fort

Trivia

  • There is an Infection medal called MMM... Brains! this refers to the classic zombie horror movie, in which zombies are feeding on human brains and other parts of their body.
