Being a patroller has a few other perks, but the most important is the ability to block users. You don't have to do anything ''extra'' unless someone is vandalizing the wiki, in which case you would block them and rollback their edits. If you're more comfortable as just an editor, that's fine. How long are we talking for these periodic absences? That sounds reasonable. The important thing is that you visit the wiki and contribute when you have the time. If someone is blanking pages or adding inappropriate content, you can block them indefinitely. If someone is adding content but they're just causing trouble or being a pain to other users, you can block them for a week or a month.
