Description[edit]

This template is used to add a notice to the top of a page that informs readers and editors that a page has a conjectural title, meaning that a name for the page's subject has not been provided in the source material. Articles with conjectural titles should generally be named in lower-case to avoid confusion with official names (see here for further information.).

This template is similar, but not the same as, Template:Callsign, and the two serve distinct functions. This template exists to denote a page with no official name supplied in the source text; Template:Callsign is used to denote a subject where the page name is an in-universe nickname, callsign, or other alias, with no formal name available. Some examples of appropriate pages are listed below.

Appropriate
  • John-117's mother - this page is about a character in-universe who has never had an official name or nickname. As such, the article's title is descriptive.
  • Covenant AI copying program - this page is about a technology in-universe with no official name, but is heavily featured and discussed in multiple sources. The name here is similarly-descriptive, with no appropriate name provided in any official source material.
  • Joyous Exultation Covenant - similar to the above, but as an organisation.
  • UNSC Spartan Dress Uniform - this article title has never been referenced in an official context, but follows a naming scheme similar to other similar subjects. As such, the template is preferred to denote the title as still unofficial.
Inappropriate
  • Codename: FIXER - this is a character in-universe with no currently-known identity. However, as we have an official codename, that is used instead. Template:Callsign would be appropriate here.
  • Dreamer - This character is referred to as the "Dreamer" in Halo: Tulpamancy. As such, while the nickname is much less formal than a callsign or codename like the above, it is still one provided in the source text.

It also adds pages to Category:Articles with conjectural titles.
