Merging major and minor "ranks"

Per above, I am of the opinion that these two ranks do not exist and are fan-given ranks. The only source for this is based on the actor-tags used in the game itself. However, actor-tags are not necessarily proof of ranks; they are only identifiers that determine which biped would receive the appropriate amount of health and shield strength. They can only be considered as ranks if there is a canon source that refers them specifically as such.

In both "The Arbiter" and "The Oracle", there is no visible command structure between the two variants. Both act in their own individual way and are not restricted to specific weapons. Based on that I'd say merge but maybe include information about the tags as trivia. We've listed those ranks for so long that some fans may come looking for them and get confused by their absence. The Halo holograms had information in the games code (filenames) that lead us to believe they went by certain names and when we learnt the truth we left notes on the respective pages to clear up any confusion, I think we should take that approach when merging these pages.--Soul reaper (talk) 12:24, 21 July 2013 (EDT)

The 'ranks' are as distinct as the Minor and Major Elite ranks in Halo 1. Elite Majors got the red shader coloration and the Minors got the Blue. These were just gameplay character hierarchy which happen to have been incorporated into the novels. As far as the game goes, the Heretics are as rank-distinct as Elites in Halo 1. If that's the case, then the merge proposal converts into an issue of title: the current rank titles are fan-given based on the actor-tags in the map file. Given what we've experienced with filename associated with each Halo hologram in Halo 3 as Soul reaper pointed above, I suggest the implementation of the Tentative template to reduce confusion (but honestly, there is a better notice template than that... just couldn't find it at the moment).— subtank 15:08, 23 July 2013 (EDT)

Not sure what you mean by the Halo 3 holograms. Was this an older Halopedia discussion? If I had to guess, I'm thinking you may mean that the naming of the 7 rings in the Encyclopedia doesn't mesh with the ring names in the Halo 3 game files. That discrepancy was created when 343i (in its fledgling state right after Halo 3) made the Encyclopedia before many of their core story people were hired and they quite literally did not know about the file names. I had asked them about this when I first discovered the file names. Since they chose not to overwrite the Encyclopedia in its second edition, I guess we're going with the Encyclopedia naming scheme. -ScaleMaster117 (talk) 20:45, 23 July 2013 (EDT)

Depends on what you mean. The variant that has the Honor Guard shoulders/leg armor but the Councillor's helmet is still present in the newer version of the Encyclopedia (in fact it's the same photo only cutout from the background now), but, like the first, there's only mention of the Councillors as a group with no specific callout to "Honor Guard Councillor" even in the original edition. It was just a poor choice of photo like the original edition showing an assault carrier photo for the Truth and Reconciliation cruiser entry. The reason the Essential Visual Guides exist is to distance them from the Encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia was originally compiled before 343i had any real story people hired. It was ill-timed. You asked if the "entry" for Honor Guard Councillor was still in. There is no Honor Guard Councillor entry in either edition o9f the Encyclopedia. There is a picture like the one you linked in each edition, but the entry is simply for Elite Councillor.
