Joint Task Force MARIAH

Joint Task Force MARIAH is a military unit within the United Nations Space Command responsible for protecting the Ark portal at Voi, including underground extensions beneath the neighboring city of New Mombasa.[1] The task force has the majority of the Spartans on Earth assigned to it,[2] likely including Spartan Jengo Farouk.

After the Covenant invasion of Earth, the East African Protectorate (with assistance of the Unified Earth Government and UNSC through Project Rebirth investment) sought to rebuild New Mombasa. The UNSC used the reconstruction as cover to perform operations and investigate the Forerunner portal complex, including periodic patrols in sectors of New Mombasa where criminals and malcontents had staging areas.[1] This was especially concerning due to New Mombasa's reconstruction and Forerunner secrets drawing insurrectionist factions, renegade Covenant splinter groups, and Banished-aligned human mercenary groups.[1]
Prior to October 2558, JTF MARIAH requested that Spartans with experience at Forerunner sites be detached from assignments aboard UNSC Infinity for a special reconnaissance mission deeper into the Excession site. Spartans eligible, and interested, in the venture were able to contact Spartan Commander Sarah Palmer to volunteer for the assignment.[2]
