Halo 3 is set in the final months of the year 2552 and several hours after the end of Halo 2. Following the Covenant invasion of Earth and the eruption of the Covenant civil war, the High Prophet of Truth and the remainder of his loyal forces have descended upon Earth. John-117, stowed away with the Covenant, has come to finish the fight while these forces begin digging something up in the East African savanna.
Halo 3 begins two weeks after Halo 2 in 2552 during the end of the Human Covenant war, beginning with the Master Chief falling to Earth in East Africa. He's rescued by Sergeant Avery Johnson and the Arbiter, whose Elites have now allied with humanity after the Covenant civil war. The remaining Covenant, led by the High Prophet of Truth and commanded by Brutes, are invading Earth and excavating a buried Forerunner artifact near New Mombasa—the portal to the Ark, a massive installation far outside the Milky Way that can remotely activate every Halo ring in the galaxy. Chief and his allies fight Covenant forces, clear anti-air defenses so Lord Hood can launch a desperate counterattack, and nearly stop Truth, but he activates the portal and flees through it with his fleet. At the same moment, a Flood-infested Covenant ship crashes nearby. Elites arrive in time to glass the infected zones. Chief fights to the wreckage, and a recorded message from Cortana (still trapped aboard the Flood-overrun High Charity) reveals that the portal leads to the solution for ending the Flood threat for good. Chief, the Arbiter, Johnson, Commander Miranda Keyes, and their forces follow Truth through the portal, joined by the Monitor 343 Guilty Spark (who has nothing left to guard after his original Halo was destroyed). They emerge at the Ark, and a space battle begins, with the elites outnumbered three to one. A ground battle ensues, and chief clears anti-aircraft wraths to allow the Forward Unto Dawn to land and drop off additional troops. The Chief destroys a scarab, and enters a forerunner installation and learns he is outside of the Milky Way. After one more battle involving a chieftain, the UNSC and elites attack the shield generators protecting truth. During this battle, Truth's brutes captures Johnson (needing a human to operate Forerunner tech) and prepares to fire the rings, believing it will trigger the “Great Journey.” After an intense battle on land and air, the flood appears, as high charity emerges from slip-space. After chief fought through the flood, he and the rest of the UNSC forces fight two scarabs, after which he and the Arbiter enter the tower Truth resides in. Miranda Keyes dies heroically trying to save Johnson. The Gravemind  temporarily teams up with Chief and the Arbiter to stop Truth. The Arbiter kills the Prophet, and they shut down the ring activation. They discover the Ark is constructing a brand-new replacement Halo (Installation 08) to replace the one Chief destroyed in. Chief decides to fire this unfinished ring: it will wipe out the Flood on the Ark and destroy the installation itself, but spare the rest of the galaxy. He dives into the crashed High Charity, rescues the real Cortana, and overloads the reactors to destroy Gravemind’s main body. On the new Halo, Flood forces swarm in as Gravemind tries to rebuild itself. Johnson tries to activate the ring, but Guilty Spark attacks him and chief to protect his “ring” and mortally wounds Johnson. Chief destroys the Monitor, Johnson dies, urging them to finish the job, and Chief fires the ring. Chief, Cortana, and the Arbiter escape on a warthog through the exploding installation, and jump aboard the UNSC frigate Forward Unto Dawn. The exploding Halo collapses the slipspace portal mid-jump, splitting the ship. The Arbiter’s half makes it back to Earth; Chief and Cortana’s half is stranded in unknown space. Back on Earth, Lord Hood holds a memorial for the fallen. He thanks the Arbiter for standing with humanity, and the Elites depart for Sanghelios. The war is finally over. In the closing scene, the drifting rear half of the Forward Unto Dawn floats in deep space. Cortana launches a distress beacon. He climbs into a cryo chamber and says, “Wake me when you need me.” On Legendary difficulty, an extra post-credits shot shows the wrecked ship drifting toward a mysterious Forerunner planet
