HAZMAT team deploying to New Phoenix.
A UNSC military HAZMAT team investigates New Phoenix in the aftermath of the Didact's attack.[1]

HAZMAT (short for Hazardous Materials) teams are personnel tasked with handling or cleaning up potentially dangerous material or operating in areas which would be unsafe for non-specialized personnel.

Overview[edit]

Responsibilities[edit]

HAZMAT teams might specialize in investigating damaged and dangerous Forerunner facilities, operating within toxic water and air, exploring sites left scarred by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons from various conflicts, and even facing pockets of Flood infestation.[2]

Following naval engagements in proximity to surviving human colonies, HAZMAT teams are typically deployed to sweep the debris field, cleaning up and collecting detritus which would threaten space travel.[3] This may involve removing hazardous objects like broken and leaking Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engines.[4] When HAZMAT teams do not remove these problems directly, they may tag a space-borne hazard with HAZNAV (navigation hazard) satellites to warn other ships from straying too close to it.[5]

Personnel[edit]

UNSC Army and Marine combat engineers may be tasked with performing HAZMAT duties. Spartan combat engineers may also be called upon to perform HAZMAT duties as necessary, carrying out tasks which require super-human reactions, strength, and situational awareness.[6]

Imbrium Machine Complex operates their own dedicated HAZMAT corps.[7]

Equipment[edit]

Some HAZMAT teams utilize the OSTEO combat engineering suit,[8] an armor system compatible with a variety of HAZMAT-focused equipment.[2]

History[edit]

Imbrium Machine Complex had HAZMAT teams stationed stationed at Elvie, on asteroid LV-31, as of 2556. When BXR Mining Corporation personnel discovered a Forerunner starship buried at Site 22, IMC's HAZMAT corps were deployed via Pelican and equipped with OSTEO combat engineering suits. However, shortly after entering the vessel, they were attacked and infected by the Flood.[7]

At least one UNSC HAZMAT team was deployed to New Phoenix following the New Phoenix Incident in 2557.[1]
