| Source caption | Hi, Thanks so much for reaching out and running through this. I'm not sure what rock I've been under, but I didn't know until now that folks were scrutinizing one of my all-time favorite Halo maps to work and play on. I must say I'm delighted and humbled that this content sparked folks' imaginations in this way. Frankly its every game-dev's dream. This may be the most unsatisfying answer I can give you: I don't recall if there was a cipher or not. I can with confidence say there was no broad or comprehensive code or cipher in the Sandtrap script. The primary goal with this (given time constraints) was to evoke complexity, antiquity, the ancient vast knowledge of the Forerunners to the viewer. What I can't confirm either way is whether there was a small section or an integrated image, symbol or word that did relay a snippet of lore or easter egg. The Sandtrap era of Halo development was fairly fast and lose when it came to artists, programmers, etc hiding a cool nugget somewhere in the game; this may have been one of those cases where I did so, but again, I don't recall. I participated in many easter eggs in my 20+ years in the biz, some released, some cut from the game. Some stand out for me, but many have unfortunately blurred together or faded. I'm sorry I can't be more definitive for you, and I hope this doesn't dampen your enthusiasm for exploring a game that so many of us poured hearts and souls into. Justin |
