Atropos' orbit is dominated by a double ring system. The inner ring was given the name "Fate" while the outer ring was known as "Destiny". The rings were composed of an unknown metal believed to be from the remains of orbital filaments designed to take radiation from a nearby pulsar star.{{Ref/Reuse|Atropos}}

Prior to the outbreak of the [[Human-Covenant War]], a group of human [[Piracy|pirates]] would be stranded on the planet. They named the planet Atropos, a reference to one of the three ancient Greek goddesses of fate.{{Ref/Reuse|Atropos}}

===Human-Covenant War===
Following the [[Battle of Installation 04]], members of the [[Governors of Contrition]] were scattered to the fringes of [[Covenant]] space with [[Kanto’Boreft]] being assigned to the Ninth Watchtower of August Attendance [[space station]].{{Ref/Reuse|Atropos}}

===Postwar===
When a [[Flood]] infected [[Condor]] from the [[Outbreak at Site 22]] entered the system and crash landed on the planet, the Governors of Contrition would land on the planet themselves. They would place a [[Covenant Citadel]] from the August Attendance over the Flood's crash site. There, members of the Governors would sacrifice themselves to the Flood. At the same time, cordial relations were established with the humans on the world.{{Ref/Reuse|Atropos}}

Following the the sacrifice of [[Atun 'Etaree]], the Flood hidden away by the Governors would begin an outbreak, spreading [[Flood spore]]s and [[pod infector]]s onto the rest of the planet's surface.{{Ref/Reuse|Atropos}}

Atropos is named after the painting ''[[Wikipedia:Atropos (Goya)|Atropos]]'', one of [[Wikipedia:Francisco Goya|Francisco Goya]]'s ''[[Wikipedia:Black Paintings|Black Paintings]]''. It is a reinterpretation of the [[Wikipedia:Moirai|Moirai]] of [[List of references to Greek mythology in the Halo series|Greek mythology]], the three goddesses of fate and destiny. Atropos was the goddess of death, the one who cuts the thread of life with her shears.
