Manual of Style Project

Main articles: User:Subtank/UpdateManual of Style Project, Manual of Style Project on Halopedia's official page

This project is to improve the quality and readability of all articles in Halopedia. Note that this project is an official guide and should be used for user revision.

Halopedia's Inclusion Policy

This unofficial section details Halopedia's policies on notability, which is based off Wikipedia's notability policy.

Template:Article Quote

Thus, in Halopedia, a subjet can only be considered notable and important if it appears in and/or has any relevance to the Halo Universe. That being said, there are some exceptions to this policy:

  • If any of these items see sufficient and future growth (at least more than a couple of sentence/a paragraph), they should have a place in Halopedia, linked from the mentioned article via ==See Also== section/heading or by using the Main Article redirect template.

Manual of Style V2 Project

Editing Standards (V2)

  • Any game, media (i.e. Novels) and level title must be written in italics.

Article size rule

Readable prose size What to do
> 100 KB Almost certainly should be divided
> 60 KB Probably should be divided (although the scope of a topic can sometimes justify the added reading time)
≥ 40 KB May need to be divided (likelihood goes up with size)
< 40 KB Length alone does not justify division
< 1 KB If an article or list has remained this size for over a couple of months, consider combining it with a related page. Alternatively, why not fix it by adding more info? See Wikipedia:Stub.

Images/Files

  • Add only canon image, not screenshots from customized/tweaked canon games or mods.
  • Avoid uploading pictures you don't have a purpose for, unless they can add to a subject gallery. Before uploading, read Help:Images for more information on image use.

Verb Tense

It is often difficult to know which tense is most suitable in articles. Below are some guidelines constructed to clarify when to use them.

Use past tense when referring to specific events that have already run their course in the game's plot. Examples below
Wrong

When Alpha Halo is destroyed, it emits a signal that places all other Forerunner installations in standby mode, including the Sentinels guarding the Shield World located within the artificial world of Onyx. On October 31, 2552, the first of these Sentinels to awaken suddenly begin attacking UNSC forces on or near Onyx. Coincidentally, Gamma Company is participating in the Top Honors exercise at the time.

Right

Plot summaries are rare exceptions to this, as they use present tense to maintain the narrative. Chapter summaries summarize a chapter's events in a "this is what happens in this chapter" fashion, as opposed to a "this is what happened in that chapter" fashion. Examples below
Wrong

The "Pillar of Autumn" is the first level in the campaign mode of Halo: Combat Evolved and in the Halo Trilogy. Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN John-117 was revived from his cryo-sleep and made his way to the bridge of the titular ship to be debriefed by Captain Jacob Keyes about their current situation. After the brief meeting, the Master Chief, with his AI companion Cortana, made his way off the ship via a Bumblebee escape pod.

Use present tense when referring to gameplay elements, characters, weapons, enemies, and the like. Examples below

The M6D PDWS was a handgun seen in Halo Universe. It was used by various characters and was the first ranged weapon the player encountered.

Right

DO NOT include phrases like "his ultimate fate is unknown" or "what happened to the ship after that is a mystery."

Perspective

In-universe?
Out-universe?

Protected Page Policy (V2)

Quite explanatory. Red means no edit, silver/white means partial editing freedom.

HaloProject Proposal

A HaloProject is a project to better organize information in articles related to Halo, based off the previous Standards Council of Halopedia. The project page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Halopedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list under this paragraph.

Below are the following list of HaloProjects:

  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Covenant
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/UNSC
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Multiplayer
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Campaign Also includes walkthroughs
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Images
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Music
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Novel
  • Halopedia:HaloProject/Miscellaneous
Note: The recent Bringing Back the Usergroups proposal is responsible for this.

REMOVAL

Creation of Project:Layout Guide;

  1. Includes removal of layout styles currently enforced in Halopedia
  2. Focus on clarification on layout use
  3. Improved user interface (avoiding eye-soring display)

Image Policy V2

  • Add only canon image, not screenshots from customized/tweaked canon games or mods. For example, only the core model of Noble Six is allowed to be used in all Halopedia articles. Customised Noble Six models are to be removed immediately.
  • Images that were previously intended to be used for userpages/personal use but have not been in used for quite some time are subjected to be deleted by the administration. As such, no notice will be given to the uploader.
  • The "SLIDESHOW" feature in the gallery mode is prohibited from general use.

UNSC Did You Know?

A small project which will improve the Did You Know template.

Separate the trivia/DYK into categories. As suggested, it should be:
  1. Game Info Trivia/DYK - Differs from Gameplay as it focuses on what is first and last. Includes Easter Eggs. For example, "Did you know ...that there is an easter egg in Timberland, called the DMM 2003?"
  2. Character Info Trivia/DYK - Typical trivia such as "Did you know ...that Johnson loves Flip Music?".
  3. Gameplay Trivia/DYK - Differs from Game Info as it focuses on Glitches and Tricks. For example, "Did you know ... that partially reloading your weapon in HaloCE/PC followed with a melee will skip the reloading phase by 1/2?"
  4. In-Universe Trivia/DYK - Typical "In {YEAR}, blah blah blah". For example, "Did you know ... that in the year October 20, 2552, Reach was invaded by the Covenant?"
  5. Real World Trivia/DYK - Fun real-world facts like "Did you know ...that Jen Taylor voiced Cortana in the Halo Trilogy?" or "...that Halo 3 uses the Havok Physics Engine".

Categorising You!

Refer to Wikipedia:Categorization. Project is to improve the categorisation system in Halopedia.
