He held the title, Doctor of Science, and was renowned for his work in the field of quantum electrodynamics.

He was also likely from Great Britain or Ireland as he held the title of Fellow of the Royal Society, a distinction awarded to British and Irish scientists.
Shaw's first name Tobias may be a reference to Tobias S. Buckell, who was hired to write Halo: The Cole Protocol around the time the name was revealed.^[3].
