The UNSC Iwo Jima was a UNSC destroyer destroyed in 2552.

Background

The ship was part of Battlegroup Stalingrad and saw action at the Battle of Onyx. During the first engagement against Covenant ships in that battle, she grazed a Covenant carrier while attempting to disengage and crashed into two destroyers. The Iwo Jima then self-destructed, destroying the two enemy warships in the process[1].

Historical Reference

The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought by the United States of America and the Empire of Japan in February and March 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The U.S. invasion, known as Operation Detachment, was aimed at capturing the airfields on Iwo Jima. On a side-note the famous flag raising photo by 5 Marines and 1 Navy corpsman was taken here.
