In Halo 3, the IWHBYD (I Would Have Been Your Daddy) Skull is located on the level The Covenant. To get this skull, you must start at the beginning of the mission, and be on the difficulty level of Normal, Heroic, or Legendary.
The Halo 3 IWHBYD (I Would Have Been Your Daddy) skull is located on the campaign level The Covenant. This skull has no actual gameplay effects, but reverses the frequency of the dialogue spoken by non-playable characters, allowing several humorous lines to be heard where otherwise such humorous lines would be very rare.

The name of the skull is based on a statement uttered by Sergeant Johnson in the first Halo: "I would have been your daddy, but a dog beat me over the fence!" It is also the name of the first chapter of the campaign level Assault on the Control Room in Halo: Combat Evolved.
Origins
In order to get the IWHBYD skull, you must complete the entire mission until you reach the final battle scene, where the Prophet of Truth is planning on lighting all seven rings. Once you reach the bridge, battle your way across with the Arbiter and Flood, neutralize all Covenant, watch/skip the cinematic, and kill all the Flood (this is optional, but makes the procedure much easier). Once the bridge is devoid of enemies, you will have to literally jump through the 7 rings in a complex order. Once you have completed this, the IWHBYD skull will appear at the beginning of the light bridge leading to Truth's podium. Make sure you do not touch the rings or jump through them before you kill Truth.
The name of the skull is based on a statement, occasionally uttered by both Sergeant Johnson and Sergeant Stacker in Halo: Combat Evolved: "I would have been your daddy, but a dog beat me over the fence!" The quote was originally spoken by Pete Stacker.

Each number corresponds to the ring you must jump through. The ring at the elevator is 1. The ring next to Truth is 7. The ring with red on it is 4.
It is also the name of the first chapter of the campaign level Assault on the Control Room in Halo: Combat Evolved. Not only is the skull's name a reference to this line, but the skull's description reads "But a dog beat me over the fence" The exception of this is in Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4, where the description reads, "Rare dialog is common and vice versa".

Sequence order: 4, 6, 5, 4, 5, 3, 4. This is another 7 reference.
Walkthrough
The IWHBYD skull is located on the level The Covenant. To obtain the skull, the player must start the level from the very beginning, and not from a Rally Point, and on Normal, Heroic, or Legendary.

Once you have completed the sequence, the skull will appear at the beginning of the light bridge leading to Truth's podium. If you are not sure you got it then look at the rings when you complete the sequence, they will be blinking. The Halo theme will play as you get the skull. You must then finish the level, or the skull will not be saved to your profile and you will have to get it again.
When you reach the final scene, where the Prophet of Truth is planning on lighting the seven rings, proceed as you would normally: kill the Covenant, kill Truth, and kill the Flood, but do not jump down the elevator shaft once you have finished that.

Each of the holographic rings sound a different tone of the E Dorian scale when you stand near it. The sequence, if you pay attention, plays part of the Halo theme song. Also, the rings in the citadel are holographic projections of the 7 Halo installations, the fourth being the newly reconstructed (and unfinished) Installation 04, the yet-to-build areas indicated by the red-glowing sections. .
Once the bridge is devoid of enemies, you will have to jump through the seven holograms of the Halos in a specific order.

Effect
You should jump through the rings after Truth dies. The skull will still appear if you are playing in co-op (2-4 players).

Q. I still can't get the skull! What am I doing wrong?
Note: you can restart jumping through the rings without restarting the level over as long as you start from the beginning.

A. You must kill the prophet and then jump through the rings.
The 7-ring sequence is as follows. Each number corresponds to the ring you must jump through; the ring at the elevator is 1, and the ring next to Truth is 7. The ring with red on it is 4.

The four most common mistakes with the skull are:
Sequence order:
*Doing the level on easy; you must do it on normal, heroic, or legendary for the skull to appear
* 4 6 5 4 5 3 4
*Starting the level from rally point alpha or bravo; you must start from the beginning of the level
Once you have completed the sequence, the skull will appear at the beginning of the light bridge leading to Truth's podium. If you are not sure you got it, then look at the rings when you complete the sequence; they will be blinking in sequence. The Halo theme will play as you get the skull. You must then finish the level, or the skull will not be saved to your profile and you will have to do it all over again.
*Jumping through the rings before truth's death; the skull will only appear after that cutscene
*Master Chief needs to jump through the rings

Q. I successfully got the skull, but it's not recorded as an achievement on my screen name, and it doesn't seem to play any of the new dialogue. What am I doing wrong?
Effect
The IWHBYD skull causes rare dialogue in the game to become commonplace, and normally frequent dialogue to become rare. These lines are can be heard spoken by all talking non-player characters; both enemies and allies.

A. When you get the skull, you must carry it until the end of the level, or it won't be saved to your profile.
For example, if a Jiralhanae is killed, one of the surviving Brutes might say, "He was my lover!" or "Every pack-brother for himself!" These lines can be heard without the skull on, but it becomes much more likely to be spoken with it on.

The IWHBYD Skull unlocks the extra dialogs in the game, which usually comes from the UNSC Marines and Elites, but some ridiculous dialogs does come from enemy forces with this skull on. For example if in a group of two Brutes one is killed, the remaining Brute has a chance to say "You killed my lover!" Here is a list of a few quotes, from their respective races.

#In the background noise, murmurs can be heard from Combat Forms that sound like, "Braaiinnsss..." This is a reference to the fact that Flood are often considered "Zombies"
#Their noises sometimes sound like: "I see you"fact if you are hiding in a corner.
#Sometimes, when your shields are gone or you die, you can hear Gravemind saying "No skill" or "You suck." Occasionally, he will talk to Combat Forms, then say something to himself.
#"Are you ready?" - Gravemind before a Flood Combat Form jumps towards you.
#"I am pretty" - Gravemind near the end of the level Floodgate.

Strategies
*Kill all enemies before you attempt the sequence.
*Do not kill your "ally" Flood until all Covenant are dead, they will help a lot in the fighting.
*An easy way to wipe them out is to melee them right off the bat and then use lesser weapons for mop-up (save the Fuel Rod Cannons and Brute Shots for later).
*Take this chapter of the level EXTREMELY slow and wipe out all enemy turned Flood, especially on Legendary so that you can complete the "ring-jumping" sequence unharmed.
*A good idea is to get the skull after you have killed Truth and all of the Flood.
*A good idea is to play on Normal if the Flood or the Covenant are too hard.

Trivia
*Ironically, the skull was intended to be the hardest skull to find. However, it was discovered very quickly by hackers.
*A possible reference to 7, I would have been your daddy has 7 syllables.
*With this skull turned on grunts seem to have a hunger for jackals with phrases like, "Jackal stew!".

John-117 with IWHBYD skull.

Origins[edit]

The name of the skull is based on a statement, occasionally uttered by both Sergeant Johnson and Sergeant Stacker in Halo: Combat Evolved: "I would have been your daddy, but a dog beat me over the fence!" The quote was originally spoken by Pete Stacker.[1]

Walkthrough[edit]

The IWHBYD skull is located on the level The Covenant. To obtain the skull, the player must start the level from the very beginning, and not from a Rally Point, and on Normal, Heroic, or Legendary.

When you reach the final scene, where the Prophet of Truth is planning on lighting the seven rings, proceed as you would normally: kill the Covenant, kill Truth, and kill the Flood, but do not jump down the elevator shaft once you have finished that.

Once the bridge is devoid of enemies, you will have to jump through the seven holograms of the Halos in a specific order.

You should jump through the rings after Truth dies. The skull will still appear if you are playing in co-op (2-4 players).

Note: you can restart jumping through the rings without restarting the level over as long as you start from the beginning.

The 7-ring sequence is as follows. Each number corresponds to the ring you must jump through; the ring at the elevator is 1, and the ring next to Truth is 7. The ring with red on it is 4.

Sequence order:

 • 4 6 5 4 5 3 4

Once you have completed the sequence, the skull will appear at the beginning of the light bridge leading to Truth's podium. If you are not sure you got it, then look at the rings when you complete the sequence; they will be blinking in sequence. The Halo theme will play as you get the skull. You must then finish the level, or the skull will not be saved to your profile and you will have to do it all over again.

Effect[edit]

The IWHBYD skull causes rare dialogue in the game to become commonplace, and normally frequent dialogue to become rare. These lines are can be heard spoken by all talking non-player characters; both enemies and allies.

For example, if a Jiralhanae is killed, one of the surviving Brutes might say, "He was my lover!" or "Every pack-brother for himself!" These lines can be heard without the skull on, but it becomes much more likely to be spoken with it on.

Trivia[edit]

 • The skull was intended to be the hardest skull to find, and was in fact the last one to be discovered. However, it was discovered very quickly after the game's release when hackers looked in the game's scripts.[2]
 • The further the skull is carried from the control panel, the brighter the rings will glow until the lights become blinding. It is assumed that the holograms would have also behaved in this manner if they were all activated.
 • Each of the holographic rings sound a different tone of the E Dorian mode when the player stand near it. The sequence, if one pays attention, plays the final 7 notes of the Halo theme song.
 • Once the player grabs the skull and the new music begins, the eerie Flood music fades, and when the player finishes the level, there will be no music while Master Chief is following Cortana, although the Halo theme will play as scripted as the ring rises out of the Ark.
 • The task to complete this skull was most likely intended to be a humorously literal allusion to the phrase "jumping through hoops". This phrase refers to the process of completing seemingly meaningless, but nonetheless required, tasks to achieve a desirable end result.
