The UNSC Iwo Jima was a UNSC Naval destroyer. She was assigned to Battlegroup Stalingrad of the UNSC Home Fleet. The Iwo Jima was destroyed in 2552 during the Battle of Onyx in The Great War.
Background
The ship was part of Battlegroup Stalingrad and saw action at the Battle of Onyx. During the first engagement against Covenant ships in that battle, she grazed a Covenant carrier while attempting to disengage and crashed into two destroyers. The Iwo Jima then self-destructed, destroying the two enemy warships in the process.[2]
Namesake
The ship's name refers to the Battle of Iwo Jima, which was fought between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan in February and March 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II.
The U.S. invasion, known as OPERATION: DETACHMENT, was aimed at capturing the airfields on Iwo Jima for shorter trips for bombing raids on Japan.
