Major is a commissioned officer rank of the UNSC Marine Corps and UNSC Army, equal in rank to Lieutenant Commander in the UNSC Navy.
A Major typically commands a battalion, such as the case of Major Antonio Silva in Halo: The Flood, or serves as a staff officer for larger units.
