A Platoon is a military unit used by the UNSC Army, the UNSC Marine Corps and the Colonial Militia to organize their combat forces.

Composition
A Platoon is a military unit used by the UNSC Marine Corps to organize its combat forces. Normally, a Platoon is composed of either three or four squads.
A platoon is typically composed of three 13 man squads, for a total of thirty-nine men not including the platoon commander. Platoons are usually led by a Second Lieutenant, with a "platoon sergeant" acting as the assistant leader of the unit, typically a role fulfilled by a Sergeant or Staff Sergeant. ODST platoons may be composed of 40 men instead.

Four platoons compose a Company. Companies typically employ three infantry platoons, bearing small arms such as rifles, shotguns and grenade launchers, though can be reinforced with heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The fourth platoon in the company is typically a heavy weapons platoon, though these numbers may change depending on the unit type and mission. "T Companies", for example, eschew this model and mix heavy weapons personnel into each platoon so all platoons instead have one weapons squad alongside their other infantry.
Composition
Platoons are composed of anywhere from 20 to 50 troops, depending on the size and number of squads in the platoon. Depending on their purpose, a Platoon can have a varying number and specialty of its personnel. Using a United States Marine Corps platoon as an example, a Rifle Platoon usually encompasses three squads of riflemen, as well as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, a Platoon Commander (usually a First Lieutenant) and a Platoon Sergeant (usually a Staff Sergeant. If the UNSC uses a Weapons Platoon, then the squads are replaced by mortar section, assault section and medium machine gun section.

ODST platoons seem to have fewer members than the regular Marine units, possibly because they aren't as easily defeated in battle, making it more efficient to deploy them in smaller forces.
