The Halo Wars Demo is the pre-released version of Halo Wars. It was released on the 5th of February of 2009.

Campaign
Campaign
This real-time strategy game demo includes two playable campaign levels, Alpha Base and Relic Approach. In the first level, playing as Sergeant John Forge, the player is tasked to help the UNSC Marines fight against the Covenant led by Arbiter Ripa 'Moramee. A squad of Warthogs will be recovered by Forge and the player will order their force to help relieve the besieged Alpha Base.
The Halo Wars Demo contained two campaign levels, Alpha Base and Relic Approach. In Alpha Base level, you, playing as Sergeant Forge, are tasked to help the Marines to fight against the Covenant. Eventually, you will receive a convoy of Warthogs and move into the base. You then fight the remains of the Covenant and take it back.

In Relic Approach, the player begins to reconstruct Alpha Base by installing barracks and supply pads to train Marines. The player will lead Sergeant Forge's forces to the Relic site, encounter and destroy various Covenant units along the way. Upon reaching the Relic, occupying Covenant forces have planted explosives intending to destroy the site before it falls into UNSC hands. After eliminating the bulk of the Arbiter's forces Sergeant Forge and Dr. Ellen Anders. escorted by Marines, venture further into the Relic and are ambushed by Stealth Elites.
In Relic Approach level, you start by fixing up the base. You would be able to build up Barracks and Supply Pads to train Marines. You then follow Sergeant Forge to the Relic, killing Covenant forces along the way. When you reach the Relic, you must kill the Covenant inside it and destroy the detonator planted by the Covenant in order to destroy the Relic. A cutscene starts when you finished the level. In the cutscene, Sergeant Forge and Anders with Marines escorting them ventured into the Relic, only to be ambushed by Stealth Elites. The level ends with Sergeant Forge requesting for backup.

Legendary difficulty would not be available for the demo release.
The Campaign only features Easy, Normal and Heroic difficulties. (Legendary is not included.)

Skirmish
Skirmish
In Skirmish mode, players will fight against a bot opponent on the mountainous snow-capped map Chasms. Captain Cutter and Prophet of Regret were the two available playable heroes included in the demo.
In Skirmish mode, you can only play against an AI on Chasm. The only hero units players could choose are Captain Cutter and Prophet of Regret. As with Campaign, the A.I. difficulties that can be chosen are Easy, Normal and Heroic. (Legendary not included in the demo.)
