Lieutenant Commander '''Amalea Petrov''' is a [[commissioned officer]] in the [[UNSC Prowler Corps|Prowler Corps]] of the [[UNSC Navy]], and the former-captain of the {{UNSCShip|Night Watch}} - a {{Class|Razor|prowler}} active in the early years of the [[Human-Covenant War]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=OB3|Oblv|Chapter=3}} In [[2526#June|June 2526]], Petrov was tasked with leading her prowler as part of a [[Battle of Netherop|mission]] to [[Netherop]] to salvage the downed [[Covenant frigate]] ''[[Steadfast Strike]]''. During the battle, she became [[marooning|stranded]] on Netherop alongside a [[Defenders of the Sanctum|faction]] of [[Sangheili]] troops led by ex-[[Fleetmaster]] [[Nizat 'Kvarosee]], resulting in her leading a low-intensity guerrilla conflict against the Sangheili on Netherop for thirty-three years.

==Biography==
===Service in the Human-Covenant War===
In late April of [[2526]],{{Ref/Note|Chapter 3 of ''Halo: Oblivion'' states that Blue Team had been assigned to ''Night Watch'' six weeks prior to the chapter's date of June 5, 2526.}} Petrov held the rank of [[Lieutenant Commander]] in the Navy and was assigned as the superior officer for [[Blue Team]], a unit of [[SPARTAN-II program|SPARTAN-II]] commandos, after their escape aboard the [[prowler]] during the [[battle of Zhoist]]. At this time, UNSC ''Night Watch'' was intended to serve as Blue Team's mobile base of operations, with Petrov acting as their mission commander and superior officer while they were aboard her ship. Despite this, she frequently overstepped her bounds, acting as the Spartans' commander even when they were deployed on-mission. In early June of that year, she and her charge were tasked with partaking in the [[Battle of Mesra]], with the prowler intended to stay in orbit around [[Mesra]] and remain undetected by potential [[Covenant fleet]] units. Despite this, she readily broke communications silence midway through the battle after being informed by [[Vice Admiral]] [[Preston Cole]] of a new breakthrough in the war that required immediate exfiltration of Blue Team: a [[Task Force Pantea|task force]] of {{Class|Halberd|light destroyer}}s had taken on a [[Covenant frigate]] and successfully disabled it, resulting in the frigate crash-landing on Netherop's surface. The ''Night Watch'' and Blue Team were reassigned to assist in recovery operations on this spacecraft, overriding any objectives they currently held on Mesra.{{Ref/Reuse|OB4}}

Even despite being scolded by both [[John-117]] and the [[24th Marine Engineering Brigade]]'s CO, [[Brigadier General]] [[Artur Pahlavi]], Petrov remained resolute in her commitment to breaking her silence - with John noting that he could practically hear her smirk upon relaying Vice Admiral Cole's orders. As such, she informed Blue Team that her prowler would be on the ground in fourteen minutes to exfiltrate them and that they were ordered to be there - even if it meant abandoning their current defensive posts. Blue Team ignored this directive, attempting to finish current objective before meeting Petrov at the [[landing zone]] nineteen minutes later - resulting in Petrov's bitter retort to the team for both delaying their exfiltration ''and'' failing to stop the advance of the Covenant armoured column. Due to the delay, ''Night Watch''{{'}}s window for exiting Mesra's orbit undetected had closed, meaning Petrov had to improvise - with the intent of using the 24th MEB's evacuation transports as a cover to allow ''Night Watch'' to slip away unnoticed.{{Ref/Reuse|OB4}}

Upon arriving at Netherop two days later, Petrov wasted no time in jump-starting the recovery mission. While standard prowler doctrine would dictate a ship to lie in orbit for several hours conducting passive reconnaissance, Petrov instead attempted to hurry the mission along by deploying one of ''Night Watch''{{'}}s [[D75/r Pelican]]s to Netherop directly - resulting in the Pelican being destroyed by one of the hidden [[intrusion corvette]]s of the [[Flotilla of Unsung Piety]]. Unbeknownst to Petrov and the prowler crew, the downed Covenant frigate was a trap set into motion by [[Nizat 'Kvarosee]] in an attempt to exact revenge on the Spartans for their victory at [[Zhoist]]; his corvettes were hanging in orbit over Netherop with the intent of intercepting the Spartans and killing them. As such, Petrov was forced to resort to directly lowering ''Night Watch'' into Netherop's atmosphere with the intent of directly deploying the Spartans to the recovery site so that they could begin clearing out the downed frigate of hostiles. However, the ship took heavy anti-aircraft fire on descent, resulting in its crash-landing on Netherop sixty kilometres from the target LZ.{{Ref/Novel|Id=OB6|Oblv|Chapter=6}}

===Survival on Netherop===
Only a few [[cycle]]s after being stranded on [[Netherop]], [[Nizat 'Kvarosee]] and his warriors found Petrov also stranded on the planet, and roasting Netherop's native [[teardrop pad]]s over a fire. By this time, the warriors were having difficulties with tracking time, and [[Tam 'Lakosee]] suggested killing Petrov to eat her and steal her supplies. However, Nizat - who had now taken on the self-proclaimed title of "[[Worldmaster]]" - interjected and pointed out that Petrov was gathering many more supplies than she would need to feed herself alone. At this time, Nizat still believed that [[Shipmaster]] [[Qoo 'Weyodosee]] had a chance to complete the [[Flotilla of Unsung Piety]]'s mission of destroying ONI - and thus redeeming Nizat of his sins. As such, he elected to wait rather than simply kill Petrov, believing her presence to be a sign from [[Covenant religion|the gods]] and not to be misused.{{Ref/Novel|Oblv|Chapter=Epilogue}}

About a year after the battle, the UNSC sent a rescue mission to Netherop. A Prowler sneaked into orbit and established contact with Petrov. However, the orbital mine shell destroyed both Pelicans that were sent to Netherop's surface. Not prepared to clear a full mine shell and unwilling to risk twenty lives to save eight, the captain called off the mission but he promised that a better-equipped mission would come back when it was feasible. True to the Prowler captain's word, the corvette {{UNSCShip|Alpina}} came years later and worked to punch through the mine shell. On the third day, the ''Alpina'' made contact with the UNSC survivors and promised that a Pelican would collect them before the next evening, having apparently found a way through the mine shell. However, Nizat was able to use the [[Divine Hand]] to destroy the ''Alpina'' and the third rescue mission that came after it around ten years after the destruction of the ''Alpina''.{{Ref/Reuse|Out9}}

After this rescue attempt, no further visits were made to Netherop; the UNSC wrote off the possibility of landing on the planet and the [[Prophet of Truth]] had deemed the loss of the [[Covenant frigate]]s ''[[Radiant Arrow]]'' and ''[[Steadfast Strike]]'' over the planet a sign of divine displeasure and forbidden all travel to the system - a ruse to cover the marooning of Nizat and his cohort.{{Ref/Novel|Out|Chapter=4}}

Over the course of the thirty-three years that they were stranded on Netherop, Nizat and [[Defenders of the Sanctum|his forces]] waged an ongoing war against Petrov and her forces, unaware that the Covenant was eventually defeated. The exiled Covenant forces would discover leftover [[Precursor]]{{Ref/Novel|Out|Chapter=17}} technology that allowed them to create armor that they called [[Sanctum's Hide]] along with the Divine Hand. However, Petrov and her forces were able to kill a number of Nizat's people over the years, leaving him with only six remaining followers, while the humans had children and their numbers only increased as time went on.{{Ref/Novel|Id=Out7|Out|Chapter=7}}{{Ref/Novel|Id=Out9|Out|Chapter=9}} Some, although not all, of the children were Petrov's own.{{Ref/Novel|Id=Out26|Out|Chapter=26}}

Over the years, discipline problems and dissent formed amongst the ranks of the Defenders of the Sanctum with a number of the warriors growing fat on the fruit that the tel provided them. During the last rescue attempt, three of Petrov's people leapt inside of the Sanctum when the Rift of Eternity opened and, instead of perishing, began to float around inside the walls of the Sanctum, stalking its inhabitants like ghosts, always watching and ever present. This persisted for two years before the last apparition - dubbed Lurkers by the Defenders - disappeared and during that time, the surveillance grew so unbearable that four Defenders fled into the desert and were never seen again. Petrov and her people witnessed them sneak out on [[mountain runner]]s and attempt to disappear into the mountains. However, unwilling to risk them being a danger again in the future, these deserters were killed by Petrov and her forces. ===Rescue from Netherop===

In [[2559]], the [[Swords of Sanghelios]] and the UNSC came to [[Netherop]] in search of the [[Divine Hand]]. After clearing out the [[orbital mine shell]], [[Arbiter]] [[Thel 'Vadam]] and his forces landed on the planet where they encountered Petrov and the UNSC survivors. 'Vadam revealed the end of the [[Human-Covenant War]] and the alliance between their two species to an incredulous Petrov. Petrov reluctantly agreed to cooperate with the [[Sangheili]], distrusting them due to her long experience of fighting [[Nizat 'Kvarosee]] and the [[Defenders of the Sanctum]].{{Ref/Reuse|Out7}}{{Ref/Reuse|Out9}}

At the conclusion of the battle, the UNSC and Sangheili survivors were evacuated by an [[D102 Owl|Owl]] to five [[D81 Condor|Condors]] in orbit. [[Rosa Fuertes]] insisted upon Petrov and her people being evacuated first and the two women boarded the ship together in the end. Finally rescued from thirty-three years of being [[marooning|marooned]], Petrov made peace with Rosa who admitted to having purposefully stranded her in the first place and offered Petrov advice on the struggles that she would face with her children on a world that was unfamiliar to them.{{Ref/Novel|Id=Out24|Out|Chapter=24}}{{Ref/Reuse|Out26}}
