Kwassass was a Covenant Grunt stationed on the Covenant supercarrier Sublime Transcendence in 2552. He was in charge of the maintenance on Subdeck K[1]. He had training in the interpretation of human speech.[2]
Ghosts of Onyx
After The Battle of Reach, the Sublime Transcendence extracted mining equipment from Reach after the Covenant tried to excavate CASTLE Base. The equipment was then put into Subdeck K; it became Kwassass' responsibility to repair and refit it.
Several months later, as the ship was over Joyous Exultation with the rest of the Combined Fleet of Righteous Purpose, Kwassass discovered a NOVA bomb that has been taken aboard along with the rest of the equipment by the Engineers for study. The control panel for it became detached, but Kwassass managed to activate a recording of a threat from Admiral Whitcomb without any harm to the vessel or the fleet. After listening to it several times, he had a vague understanding of what it meant, but not the specifics of the message. However, the power ran out to the Control Panel, sparking an interest in the nearby Engineers to fix it and give it power.
Kwassass was the only individual near the Nova bomb to recognize the threat and tried to remove the panel to deactivate the bomb again, but was unable to get past the Engineers that had clustered around it before the bomb went off.[3]
