Though not an official name, the Brute Landmine can be seen on the multiplayer level Sandtrap. If the player moves outside of the map's border, these mines will automatically eject themselves from a buried position, rise vertically about 2-3 meters above the ground and detonate in a manner similar to a UNSC fragmentation grenade.

These mines are located on Sandtrap because Brutes originally occupied this area, and probably set them up to defend themselves against attackers. The mine itself looks very similar to a larger version of the Brute Spike Grenade, without the handle or the three main spikes on the top edges, and is extremely effective against vehicles and infantry.

Since the mine is designed to explode above a target, similar to the old air burst or a bouncing betty, it can shower the crews of vehicles like the Mongoose or Prowler, or regular infantry that are foolish to venture into the minefield, with explosive debris. The mine is less effective against aerial targets (because it will explode only a relatively short height above the ground) unless the player is flying relatively low to the ground. The mines can hurt players even if invincibility is turned on, if they are in a Bubble Shield or behind a Deployable Cover, similar to the Automated Plasma Turrets in Snowbound.

In terms of story value, the mines may have been set up by Brutes to form a defensive perimeter around the Forerunner artifacts they were digging up in Sandtrap, preventing easy ground assault. The presence of the UNSC Frigate Aegis Fate overhead, however, circumvented this and now they prevent ground-based exits.

Trivia

  • If by a chance or luck you find a spot outside the perimeter where you aren't tripping the mines, you can see that the mines aren't entirely buried, as the top of the mine's heads and tops can be seen visible in sparse groups of five, or six.
  • Only some vehicles can outrun the mine's blast. These being the Warthog, Ghost, Chopper (only for a while), and the fastest in-game vehicle, the Mongoose.
  • Two direct hits from a landmine will kill you if you go on foot.
  • When the player speed is turned up beyond 200%, a player can easily outrun the mines' damage radius.
  • When the player's speed is 300% and the player's gravity is 50% they can outrun the mines with even more relative ease.
  • When high above the minefield, the mines will still come above ground and explode. But because of the mine's short jump height, it won't hurt you unless you're really close to the ground.
  • Overloading the map with Trip Mines will prevent the mines from popping up and killing you, though it may still randomly come back. Note: The absence of the mines is only limited to the current game you're playing.
  • The mines make the exact same noise as a Frag Grenade when exploding.
