The MJOLNIR EOD Variant.

The Mark VI MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/EOD variant [1], more commonly known as Explosive Ordnance Disposal Armor, and abbreviated as EOD Armor, is a type of United Nations Space Command body armor.

Introduction

The EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) is a variant of the standard Mark VI MJOLNIR powered battle armor. It is an armor permutation in Halo 3 multiplayer. Bungie has confirmed that no armor permutation has an effect on gameplay.

Development and History

The Mjolnir/EOD variant was created at UNSC Damascus Materials Testing Facility facility on Chi Ceti 4. The helmet was designed to channel the pressure wave around the user's head, significantly reducing the likelihood of decapitation in the event of an explosion. The Mjolnir/EOD variant's pauldrons and chest plate were designed specifically to reduce the number of grabbing edges on the armor, decreasing the likelihood of dismemberment and designed specifically to protect Spartans during operations involving the handling of explosive ordnance [e.g., clearing/planting land mines, demolishing enemy structures/material].

Characteristics

Helmet Characteristics

The Helmet is mostly squared off with two separate eye pieces like a pair of goggles rather than the typical wide visors of the MJOLNIR armors. It also has a single plate over the nose and mouth and a pair of rectangular objects along each cheek, assumed to be cheek guards and re-breathers.

Shoulder Characteristics

The shoulder plates of the EOD armor bear a great resemblance to those of Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000, though they are much smaller along the covering of of the shoulder and the upper arm. EOD plates are more squared off, lack the trim, and have a small energy shield generator set into them. These generators are an integral part of the standard MJOLNIR energy shield system, and can be found in different shapes and sizes on all MJOLNIR armor variants.

Chest Characteristics

The EOD chest looks to be like a bulkier version of the Mark VI armor variant. This is most likely to increase survivability of frontal explosions or attacks. Interestingly, the chest piece also strikes a resemblance to the Mark V chest. (Halo:Combat Evolved armor.)

Trivia

  • The armor seems to have been heavily inspired by that of the Helghast armor from the Playstation 2 game, Killzone. Bungie has joked that they are arch enemies with Guerrilla (The developer of Killzone), but the two developers apparently get along well (ironic, considering "Killzone" was meant to be a "Halo Killer" for the PlayStation 2).
  • The pre-release renders of the helmet resembled the helmets worn by the Space Marines from the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
  • The helmet bears striking resemblance to the helmet the soldiers wore in the Bungie game "Oni". The main difference being the Halo version features a mouth cover.
  • The Helmet bears resemblance to the COGs' helmets from Gears Of War.
  • The Chest piece is similar to The MARK V chest piece
  • The Helmet's shape has a similar look to Gimli's helmet from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson has also been hired to produce the Halo Movie.
  • The Helmet bears a striking resemblance to that of Stormtroopers from the Star Wars series.
  • The chest piece also looks like the chest plate of the Mk V MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor.
